The game was “Cross Country,” meaning the players could select their score on either 1 or 10, 2 or 11, 3 or 12, etc. and subtract one-half their handicap. And, because of the plugged and sanded greens, the two-putt rule was implemented, meaning that after two putts, you pick up the ball.

First flight low gross: Kelly MacKinnon, 82. Game: 1, Debi McDermont, 30; 2, Karla Dreiss, 30.5. Second flight low gross: tie, Sandy Fortino and Janet Ford, 96. Game: 1, Cindy Bell, 25.5; 2, Pam Coleman, 29.5. Third flight low gross; Liz Mosher, 105. Game: 1, Barbara Lutz, 29.5; 2, Susan Pease, 30.5; 3, Sue Blizman, 31. Closest to pin on No. 2: 1, Gail Johnson; 2, Dreiss; 3, Mosher.

Butte Creek Country Club

The turnout was light for the Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club’s tournament last week, primarily because of inclement weather and the greens have also been recently plugged and sanded. The game format was “Tee to Green” excluding the putts in the game score. The top three players earning a little golf shop credit were: 1, Karen Fearon, 41; 2, Paula Rich, 42; 3, Sally Hayes, 43.

Looking back 10 years to April 8, 2014

Spectacular shots

Brian Bowen (the Nissan man) recorded his first hole-in-one on the 11th hole at Canyon Oaks. Bowen’s perfect 135-yard, 9-iron tee shot was also observed disappearing into the cup by his playing companions, Randy Cook and Scott McLeod. Perhaps there is some reward after all for donating a new car each year to benefit the Almond Bowl football game.

Canyon Oaks Country Club

In addition to their regular weekly outing, the Canyon Oaks CC Women’s Golf Club held a two-person 6-6-6 format tournament, 6-holes alternate shot, 6-holes scramble and 6-holes best ball. The team of Evie Spring and Linda Harris garnered first place with a team score of 68.3. Nancy Taylor and Shelley Carney finished one stroke back for the second spot. Finishing third was the team of Vickie Spelts and Nancy Vieira at 70.6.

In its weekly tournament, Carney was both low gross and low net in the first flight, as well as taking first in the game portion. Taylor took second via the card-off procedure over Fran Wedow. In the second flight, Jackie Drakulic followed Carney’s lead taking both low gross and low net and first in their game. Joan Wagoner and Carol finished second and third respectively. Closest to the pin winners were: 1, Taylor; 2, Ellie Fairchild; 3, Vieira.

Butte Creek Country Club

Shawn Blofsky and Darren Normoyle tied for first place low net in the Casa Munras Invitational Tournament held at Butte Creek. Bruce Hubbell took the third spot with a net 69. Derrick Shultz, Assistant Golf Professional at Butte Creek, took low gross with a one-under par score of 70. Jim Wilson finished second in the gross division with a score of 76. Dan Normoyle and Rich Attinger (70) tied for fourth place net.

Shultz is now off to Florida for his second session in his quest to become a Class A, PGA Golf Professional. Tom Pyeatt, Assistant Professional at Canyon Oaks CC, recently successfully completed his second session. One more trip to Florida for their third and final session and both will become full-fledged Class A, Pros. Good luck!

Irma Jenkins and Sherian Hornbeak finished first and second in the Butte Creek CC Women’s Golf Club monthly Medallion Day Tournament. Betty Dean and Bonnie Ford followed suit in the second flight. Cilla Hauer and Suzy Mann claimed the honor in the third flight.

Table Mountain Golf Course

The Table Mountain GC Women’s Golf Club held their monthly pro-points tournament last week. Sally Stemen (84) was low gross. Mary Borgo (72) was low net on the day. Others placing in the net category were: 1, Janet Ott; 2, Sue Snow (73); Kris McGee (76); 4, Sandy Goble (79).

The Table Mountain GC Men’s Golf Club played a 4-Man Shamble, 2-Best Ball format for their weekly tournament. First flight winners were Tony Baptista, Vic Goble, Jerry McGee and Arvo Voip. Joe Nehl, Albert Nelson, Stephen McCarthy and Jeff Young won the second flight. First place third flight: Billy Harp, Jerry Pagel, Larry White, and a blind draw. Closest to the pin winners on the four, par-three holes were: Dan Flippin; Brent Bills, Jim Buck and Jamie Scharff.

The Magistrate of Brussels, in 1360; “Whoever plays ball with a club shall be fined 20 shillings, or their upper garment.”

Kirk Sessions of Boharm in 1658; “James Waldie to have plaid at the golfe with the herds of Mulben; being found guilty they were rebuked for making so little conscience of the Lord’s day, and ordained to make their publick repentance three Lord’s days.”

Thomas Smollett in 1771; “Of this diversion the Scots are so fond, that, when the weather will permit, you may see a multitude of all ranks, from the senator of justice to the lowest tradesman, mingled together, in their shirts, and following the balls with utmost eagerness.”

Benjamin Rush (American Founding Father), circa 1800; “Golf is an exercise which is much used by the Gentlemen of Scotland. A large common, in which there are several little holes, is chosen for the purpose. It is played with little leather balls stuffed with feathers; and sticks made somewhat in the form of a hand-wicket.”

Good weather for golf, short lived as it was | Tee to Green https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/26/good-weather-for-golf-short-lived-as-it-was-tee-to-green/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 10:25:02 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4329321 The annual Captains vs. Co-Captains Tournament of the Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club held last week was, as usual, a close contest, albeit it was cut short because of inclement weather.

It was Karen Escott’s “Explorers” team against Cynthia Paulo’s “Peeps”. Paulo’s Peeps prevailed “barely” in both the gross and net categories, 529 to 533 and 423 to 428.

Individual gross category: 1, Susan McVicker Wever; 2, Tie, Robin Manna, Sally Pearson and Shelley Carney. 3, Karen Olson. Net Category: 1, Sue Osterholt; 2, Vickie Spelts; 3, Linda Arellano; 4, Cathy Edgar; 5, Linda Alworth. Closest to pin on hole No. 3: 1, Pearson; 2, Gayle Hutchinson; 3, Vieira. Hole No. 6: 1, Escott; 2, Osterholt; 3, Alworth.

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club also held a 3-player, 2 net best-ball Shamble format for its weekly game.

The best tee shot was selected and from there, each member played their ball until holed out. Taking first was the team of Nancy Dooly, Gina Snider and Evie Spring with a score of 116. The team of Karen Escott, Sally Pearson and Vickie Spelts finished in the second spot at 121.

Closest to pin on No. 11: 1, Karen Escott; 2, Nancy Vieira; 3, Shelley Carney. Hole No. 6: 1, Escott; 2, Osterholt; 3, Alworth.

Bidwell Park Golf Course

Kelly MacKinnon continued her winning ways in the Bidwell Women’s Golf Club’s monthly Pro-Points tournament.

MacKinnon was low gross in the first flight with a score of 92. Karla Dreiss and Sheila McMurphy tied for low net at 72.

Second flight low gross: Sandy Fortino, 102. Net category: 1, Barbara Albers, 75; 2, Irma Jenkins, 78; 3, Donna Ensele, 79. Third flight low gross: Liz Mosher, 104. Net: 1, tie, Linda Mowell and Sue Blizman, 75; 3, Deena Cooper, 77. Closest to pin on No. 4: 1, Shelley Connolly; 2, Albers. Bidwell is still playing a little tough, because of the wet conditions, but not much longer.

Butte Creek Country Club

It was a good turnout of the senior men’s club members, with 15 teams participating in its monthly tournament.

The team of Ed Anderson and Mike Lim played a bogie-free round in the 2-Man Blind Draw Scramble format, shooting a gross score of 68 and a net score of 64.04 to take both the low gross and low net stipends. The old “Ham & Egg” adage was definitely the deciding factor.

The team of Mike Bechtol and Rovane Younger took second low net with a score of 66.88 by a mere 0.03 of a point. The team of Gary Crane and Jim Westcott, along with the team of Erv Alves and John Olsen, tied for the third spot at 66.91. Rounding out the payout in golf shop credit was the team of Royal “Aire” Hawkley and Richard O’Sullivan, with a score of 67.16 to take the fifth spot. The scores were close, to say the least.

The Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club weekly tournament was a Step Aside Scramble, meaning whose shot is chosen, that person is ineligible to hit on the next shot.

There was a good turnout of 26 members taking advantage of the great weather as short-lived as it was. There was a two-way tie for first place, with a score of 55, between the team of Joan Bequette, Sally Hayes, Pam Miller and a blind draw, and the team of Janet Alves, Paula Sands, Pat Stephenson and a blind draw.

The third spot was won by the team of Tami Blofsky, Cilla Hauer, Barbara Joronen and Sherri Kimmelshue with a score of 57.

Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club

The Chico-Paradise SIR’s traveled up to Red Bluff and played a 4-Man Scramble format at Wilcox Oaks GC for its semi-monthly tournament last week.

The club’s guru, Darrell Hands, reported that the course in general was in great shape, especially the greens. Apparently, Rich Reynolds’ move from Butte Creek, as an assistant golf professional, up to Wilcox Oaks as its general manager and PGA head golf professional was beneficial, not only for Reynolds, but also for Wilcox Oaks.

The good turnout of the SIR’s members enabled the payouts to go down to fourth place.

Taking first was the team of Sam Davis, Darrell Hands, Cap Porterfield and Craig Herman with a score of 61.

The scores of the other teams finishing in the money were really close. No. 2, Jim Barger, Bob Mabrey, Dennis McNamara and Gary White, 62.0; 3, Dave Barnum, Mike Lim, Charles Staser and Jim Weidert, 62.3; 4, Ron Griffin, Richard Nussbaum, Ron Peterson and Benny Sommer, 62.7. Closest to pin contest: Hole No. 4: 1, Staser; 2, Mabrey. Hole No. 8: 1, Dennis Bruggman; 2, Rich Carlson. Hole No. 15: 1, Mabrey; 2, Weidert. Hole No. 18: 1, Carlson; 2, Don Lampe.

Junior golf

Livy Woodward won an unprecedented seven tournaments in a row in the U.S. Kids Central Valley Tour girls’ 8-and-under division, as a result of her win last weekend in the Tour Championship Tournament at Rancho Solano GC in Fairfield. Woodward shot another subpar round of 35 to easily win the tournament and the title, dominating her opponents in the process. Awesome.

Nine-year-old Alex Baca tied for second place in the U.S. Kids, Sacramento Tour Tournament at Mather GG last weekends with a score of 44. Congratulations!

Spectacular shots

Ed Anderson (aka, “yours truly,” as Ted Blofsky refers to me) scored an eagle two on the 16th hole at Butte Creek during the senior men’s weekly outing. Witnessing the ball being retrieved from the hole, because no one actually saw it disappear into the cup, following the 137-yard, 24-degree hybrid approach shot, were Cliff Kitayama, Ray Parker, Denny Varley and Rovane Younger.

Greg Martin eagled the par 5, 10th hole at Butte Creek last Friday, albeit he made it look easy. Reaching the green in two, Martin sank his putt for a 3 on the scorecard. Martin’s teammates were, Jim Westcott, Ray Parker, Cliff Kitayama and Erv Alves.

Carla Fritzler, a member of Butte Creek, traveled out-of-town recently to achieve her first hole-in-one. Fritzler aced the 17th hole at the Shadowridge GC in Palm Desert. Witnessing Fritzler’s perfect 94-yard, 7-iron tee shot find the bottom of the cup, was her husband, Mark.

Small field for zone qualifying at Bidwell | Tee to Green https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/19/small-field-for-zone-qualifying-at-bidwell-tee-to-green/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 10:30:31 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4266268 The El Rancho Chico Golf Club held its 4-Man, North Zone Qualifying Tournament last Sunday. Two flights participated in the tournament, but only the teams playing from the white tees were eligible to compete for the right to represent Bidwell in the zone finals in Monterey. White tees: 1, Matt Ferguson, Todd Martin, Miles Tegarden and Duke Warren, 130; 2, Mike Barney, Ben Heerema, Jeff Nedved and Eric Sargent, 131; 3, Rob Dunlap, Rio Gates, Jon Rettig and Travis Shute, 138; 4, Adam Almond, Chas Gower, Ron Serna and Dave Williams, 138.

The winning team declined to move on to the zone finals, therefore the second place team will represent Bidwell, April 8-9 in Monterey at the Del Monte and Poppy Hills courses. For some reason, the popularity of this qualifying tournament has declined over the years. It could be the cost of travel and staying in Monterey several days may be one of the deterrents, albeit the ERCGC pays the tournament entry fee.

Yellow tee flight: 1, Craig Fellner, Craig Herman, Vic Mitchell and Dan White, 124; 2, Art Gausemel, Pat Goodwin, Phil Jones and Rich Lash, 127; 3, Randy Cook, Lloyd Hightower, Tod Kimmelshue and Rob Sylvester, 130; 4, Bill Allen, AJ Haggard, Jim Marler and Roy Peters, 132.

Closest to the pin contest: Hole No. 2; Herman, No. 7: Jones; No. 12: Rettig; No. 16: Jon Carlson.

Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club

Sticking close to home, the Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club played a 4-Man Scramble format at Bidwell for its semi-monthly tournament. 1, Sam Davis, Craig Herman, Ed Main and Gary White, 59.7; 2, Paul Brossoit, Jeff Eber, Mark Hyder and Glen Pertuit, 62.8; 3, Kyle Glaziner, Jack Knowlton, Dick Parsons and Steve Velasco, 64.6. The closest to pin contest was pretty much dominated by Hyder: No. 2: 1, Alex Van Patten; 2, Hyder. No. 4: 1, Main; 2, Hyder, No. 7: Pertuit, No. 16: Hyder.

Butte Creek Country Club

The Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club played an Irish 4-Ball Stableford Tournament for its weekly game. Holes 1-6 were 1 best-ball, holes 7-11 were 2 best balls, holes12-15 were 3 best-balls and holes 16-18 were 4 best-balls. Tough format for sure. Taking first with a team score of 79 points, was the team of Cyndi Bailey, Barbara Joronen, Sherri Kimmelshue, and Ruth Younger.

Canyon Oaks Country Club

The weekly game for the Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club was called “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda,” allowing the players to have three mulligans (do overs) during the round. Sally Pearson was low gross and low net on the day, 91/68. Game; 1, Pearson, 68; 2, Vickie Spelts, 75; 3, tie, Cynthia Paulo and Cathy Edgar, 79. Closest to pin on No. 6: 1, Spelts; 2, Lynne Beyers; 3, Arellano.

Significant achievement

Morgan Pitman gave the USC Monterey golf coach another reason to be thankful Pitman will be enrolled there next fall. Pitman qualified for the San Francisco City Championship and then proceeded to defeat the No. 1 seed, who was also the medalist in the qualifying round, 4-and-3 in her first match. She lost in her quarterfinal match 2-down, but nevertheless, pretty amazing for the Pleasant Valley High School senior.

Spectacular shots

John Hayes started his round off in grand style at Butte Creek last week. Hayes holed out his 106-yard, pitching wedge approach shot on the opening hole for an eagle two. His perfect shot was witnessed by his playing companion, Rex Boylan.

Looking back 10 years to March 18, 2014

Canyon Oaks CC

The Canyon Oaks CC Women’s Golf Club recently held their annual age bracket tournament, but since discretion takes precedence over courage when it comes to valor I will omit the age categories and identify the winners by the name of the flight and in no particular order, smart huh? Nancy Vieira was low gross in the Augusta flight. Sally Pearson was low net. Susan Wever and Nancy Taylor finished in the second and third spot. Ellie Fairchild was low gross in the Canyon Oaks flight. Low net went to Yasuko Zingg. June Park and Karen Escott tied for second place. Low gross in the Pebble Beach flight was Pat Radisich. Susan Moon shot the low net score. Jackie Drakulic and Lenora chapman tied for second. The closest to the pin winner on hole No. 6 was Kathleen Seppanen. Wever won on hole No. 11. Moon took the award on the 14 hole.

Sally Pearson won both low gross and low net in the first flight of the Canyon Oaks CC Women’s Golf Club weekly outing. Joan Wagoner followed suit in the second flight with both the low gross and low net scores. In their game portion the low net winners in the first flight were: 1, Pearson; 2, Nan Wysong; 3, Ellie Fairchild; 4, Vickie Spelts. Bidwell Park GC

The Bidwell Park GC Women’s Golf Club held a four-clubs and a putter tournament for their weekly outing. Joan Patton was low gross in the second flight. Vivian Standard and Cheryl Vermillion tied for low net. Low gross in the third flight was Betty Linzy. Barbara Lutz was low net. Jean Rolls posted the low gross score in the fourth flight. Wendy Donahoo took low net.

The team of Karey McKenney, Karla Dreiss, May Gallaway and Betty Linzy took first place in the Butte Creek CC Women’s Golf Club guest day tournament with a team score of 120. The team of Sherian Hornbeak, Joye Smith, Sharon Nelson and Donna Dorn finished second at 128.

Table Mountain GC

Sally Stemen shot the low gross score (84) in the Table Mountain GC Women’s Golf Club tournament. Kris McGee was low net at 73. The first flight winners were: 1, Mary Borgo; 2, Elisa Senko; 3, Janett Ott. The second flight winners were: 1, Ann Howell-Wood; 2, Pete Powell; 3, Judy Thompson.

The game was “36 Net Best Ball.” The format required each four-man team to decide how many net score to keep from the previous hole before teeing off on the next hole, so as to record a total of 36 scores by the end of the round.

1, Scott Borges, Bob Kromer, Steve Simpson and Greg Smith, 52; 2, Rick Barrett, Mike Loofbourrow, Art Schreiber and Lee Watrous, 57; 3, tie, Marty Coil, Richard Emsweiller, Dennis McNamara and Ken Watson, along with the team of Bruce Gibson, Emmett Lazaro, Tim Lehor and Paul McIntosh, 58. Closest to the pin contest: No. 3, Schreiber; No. 6, Kromer; No. 11: Loofbourrow; No. 14, Borges.

Butte Creek Country Club

The Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club could choose either the front nine or back nine for its tournament score for its weekly game in the individual low net format. First flight: 1, Jeannie Stone, 26; 2, Jayne Bunting, 27; 3, Karla Dreiss, 28. Second flight: 1, Suzy Mann, 28; 2, tie, Karen Beckman and Ruth Younger, 29.

Chico State women’s golf

The Chico State Women’s golf team started its spring tournament season this week in the CSU San Marcos Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge GC in Vista. Next week they travel to the Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert to participate in the Augustana Spring Fling. The team is led by Brooke Pelletier, Kaylie Parola, Ariana Blagrove, Trinity Hernandez and Kelly More. The women’s team head coach is Heather Fegley.

Junior Golf

Eight-year-old Livy Woodward kept her streak alive, winning two more US Kids Central Valley Tour tournaments this past weekend. She shot a 3-under par score of 33 to win at Swenson Park GC in Stockton by 5 strokes. She came right back the next say at Dry Creek Ranch GC in Galt on Sunday and shot an even par 36 to win by 2 strokes. This makes it 6 in a row for this young wonder woman. It’s no surprise that she has been invited to the US Kids World Championship Tournament at Pine Hurst NC in August to compete in the girls’ 8-and-under division..

Significant achievement

Pat Goodwin chalked up another ace last week at Bidwell. Goodwin’s 13th career hole-in-one was achieved on the 2nd hole, when his 110-yard, pitching wedge tee shot found the bottom of the cup. Witnessing Goodwin’s perfect shot were his playing companions, Joe Galloway and Doug Shook.

Spectacular shots

Joan Wagoner aced the 11th hole at Canyon Oaks CC as attested by her playing companions, June Park and Bonnie Seeley.

Eddie Vela score the first hole-in-one of his playing career on the No. 12 hole at Bidwell Park GC. Vela’s perfect 168-yard, 5-iron tee shot was witnessed by Ted Singelis, Bill Jones and Peter Lopez.

Eric Sargent scored his ace while playing in the Paradise SIR’s semi-monthly tournament at Canyon Oaks CC. Fortunately for Sargent his hole-in-one was on the No. 3 hole, which was also designated as the closest to the pin hole.

Bob Sears, holed out his 175-yard, 7-wood approach on the 15th hole at Butte Creek CC for an eagle 2, as attested by his wife, Dawna.

Paradise SIR’s Golf Club

Game: 1, Pearson, 56; 2, Joan Wagoner, 60; 3, Nancy Vieira, 61. Closest to pin on No. 14: 1, Cynthia Paulo; 2, Vickie Spelts; 3, Wagoner.

This past weekend she competed in two events, one at Paradise Valley GC in Fairfield on Saturday and again at Spanos Park on Sunday. She won by a whopping 18 strokes on Saturday, shooting a one-under-par score of 35. The next day at Spanos Park it was déjà vu, shooting another one-under 35, and winning by 10 strokes. This young lady is on a roll and definitely enjoys being in the winner’s circle.

Spectacular shots

Brandon Long scored his first hole-in-one on the 16th hole at Bidwell last week. Witnessing Long’s perfect 149-yard, 7-iron tee shot disappear from view into the cup were his playing companions Ryan Lund and Shane Castillo.

Looking back

One thing about this rain we’re having is that in order to fill up the column, we can look back in time and recall the accomplishments of some of our friends and fellow players (past and present). The following was the golf column from March 3, 2014

Leckinger and O’Donnell Dominate Again

Butte Creek Country Club

Bob Leckinger and Mike O’Donnell continue to rule the links in Butte Creek Men’s Club tournaments. This mighty duo won the BCCC Spring Open Tournament in style by winning both the gross and net category in the blue tees first flight. They won the net title by three-strokes over their nearest competitor and the gross title by one-stroke. Leckinger and O’Donnell won the 2013 Butte Creek Men’s Invitational then followed that win up a few months later to win the Fall Classic. The second and third place net teams in the blue tees first flight were the father and son team of Phil and Brian Jones (64), and John MacTavish and Ed Anderson (66), respectively.

The team of Gary Bright and Royal Hawkley won the blue tees second flight with a score of 61. Jim Mann and Jim Westcott took second, one stroke back. Bill Kyle and Brian McGovern finished in the third spot at 64. Jerry Louie and Chuck Lohse won the white tees flight with a score of 62. The team of Denny Varley and Jim Gaumer and the team of Clyde Powers and Don Bultema spit the second and third place winnings after both teams tied with a score of 63.

Those winning the horserace contests were: Blue tees first flight: MacTavish and Anderson. Blue tees second flight: Bright and Hawkley. White tees flight: Powers and Bultema.

Irma Jenkins was again the first flight leader in the clubhouse in the Butte Creek CC Women’s Golf Club monthly Medallion Day Tournament with a net score of 74. Vickie Ellcessor shot a net 78 to take the second spot. Barbara Joronen won the second flight with a 79. Karey McKenney’s net 81 was good enough for second place. Joan Bequette (82) and Darlene Thomasson (83) were the top finishers in the third flight.

Table Mountain Golf Course

The Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club took it easy on themselves last week and played their “par 3” course set-up. Sandy Goble took low gross. Kris McGee won low net. Others in the winners’ circle were: 1, Elaine Thomas; 2, Margo Borgo; 3, Janett Ott; 4, Sue Snow.

Canyon Oaks Country Club

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club also were able to get their weekly tournament in last week between the rainy days. Low gross over the field was Konnie Marskey. Shelley Carney took low net. Those winning in the game portion were: 1, Tammie Cook; 2, Carney; 3, Nancy Vieira. The closest to pin winners were: 1, Vieira; 2, Cook; 3, Marskey.

Lava Creek Golf Course

The team of Wally Zampa and Patrick Welch will represent the Lava Creek Men’s Golf Club at the upcoming NCGA two-man zone regional qualifying tournament. Zampa and Welch shot a best-ball net score of 55 to edge out the team of Rudy Melashenko and Tom Mason by two strokes.

Baggers of Sand, Beware!

This was the title of an article, written in 2004 by Jim Cowan, Director of the Northern California Golf Association Course Rating and Handicapping Department, which appeared in the NCGA Blue Book, in Cowan’s column “Through the Green.” The NCGA did an exhaustive analysis and documentation of all sanctioned NCGA competitive rounds for a two-year period to arrive at their conclusions, and their subsequent actions imposed on players who consistently shoot at or under their “established” handicap. Cowan’s article was an effort to emphasize the enormity of the problem as the NCGA foresaw it, and their efforts to “level the playing field.”

“Based on the performances of some players as reported by the NCGA during their sanctioned tournaments you would think that scores several strokes under one’s handicap are everyday occurrences. They are not! In many instances, they are “once in a decade” or even “once in a lifetime” types of scores.” For instance: if you are a 12 handicap, the odds of shooting 84 (net par of 72) are 5 to 1 against. The odds of shooting 74 (10 under your handicap) are 84,300 to 1 against.” The odds obviously vary in between because they go up exponentially. The odds of a five-handicapper playing five strokes under his handicap twice in a row are a whopping 143,641 to 1.”

Local courses still saturated and debris laden | Tee To Green https://www.chicoer.com/2024/02/27/local-courses-still-saturated-and-debris-laden-tee-to-green/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 09:31:01 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4245783 The El Rancho Chico Golf Club had another good turnout of its members last week to participate in a 4-Man Scramble format tournament at Bidwell Park Golf Course, in spite of inclement weather and saturated course conditions.

White tee flight low gross was the team of Tony Alspaugh, Ben Heerema, Dave Koistinen and Jeff Nedved with a score of 61. Net category: 1, Adam Almand, Chas Gower, Ron Serna and Dave Williams, 58.1; 2, Matt Ferguson, Todd Martin, Miles Teagarden and Duke Warren, 59.2; 3, Tina Dunlap, Orval Hughes, Mike McKee and Jim Weidert, 60.

Yellow Tee flight low gross: Lane Bates, Richard DeVaney, Curtis Huff and Kent Jungling, 62; Net category: 1, Bill Allen, AJ Haggard, Dave Koch and Jim Marler, 60.3; 2, Bruce Ballou, Jon Carlson, Kerry Kennedy and Erick Ralston; 61.1; 3, Jim Barrett, Craig Fellner, Craig Herman and Vick Mitchell, 62.8.

Closest to the pin winners on the five par 3 holes: No. 2, Fellner; No. 4, Dunlap; No. 7, Tim Markey; No. 12, Brian Bowen; No. 16, Phil Jones.

Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club

The Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club stayed close to home and also played a 4-Man Scramble format at Bidwell for its semi-monthly tournament. 1, Jeff Eber, Paul Brossoit, Mark Hyder and Glen Pertuit, 59.6; 2, Greg Brown, Dick Parson, Dan Solomon and Kyle Glaziner, 61.3; 3, Dennis Bruggman, Michael Hull; Ray Quinto and Alex Van Patten, 62.7. Closest to pin on No. 2: 1, Hull; 2, Jim Bondon; No. 4: 1, Bob Browning, 2, Jim Cagno; No. 7: 1, Quinto; 2, Hull; No. 12: 1,  Glaziner; 2, Jim Weidert; No. 16: 1, Richard Nussbaum; 2, Doug Shook.

Junior Golf

Eight-year-old Livy Woodward started the US Kids Central Valley Spring Tour off in grand style. Woodward won the girls’ 8-and-under division at Micke Grove GC in Lodi going away by 6 strokes. Woodward shot a 2-under-par score of 34 in the 9-hole tournament last week.

Looking back to
February 25, 2014

With minimal golf news because of the havoc Mother Nature has played recently on our local golf courses, let’s step back 10 years and see who was achieving success on the links.

Canyon Oaks Country Club: The competition was tough and the scores close in the Canyon Oaks CC NCGA 2-Man Net Better Ball qualifying round (actually called “four-ball”). Three teams tied for low net at 62 and six teams tied for fourth place with a score of 63. The team of Mike O’Donnell and Ryan O’Donnell and the team of Jim Stevens and Dan Gonzales edged out the team of Paul Zastrow and Jason Zastrow on a back-nine card-off. The Zastrow boys will have to settle for the alternate spot if one of the winning teams cannot make the next level of qualifying on April 22. One of the qualifying courses is Bidwell Park GC, which is very convenient for those in our area. Sure beats having to drive to the bay area or Sacramento.

Chico SIR’s Golf Club: Alan Stephenson was again on top in the first flight of the Chico SIRS Golf Club tournament, held at Bidwell Park GC, with a net score of 66. Pete Abolins and Ray Navarro tied for second place with a score of 74. Don Cummings also shot a net 66 to win the second flight. Way to go Don! Rich Attinger and Joe Gallaway tied for second place at 68. Don Foster shot a net 68 to win the third flight. Gene Rideout (69) was second. Mike Hood, also with a net 66, won the fourth flight. Bob Huss and Jack Schmidtke both shot a net 67 to tie for the second spot. Closest to pin winners were: 1, Bob Mayerak; 2, Skip Reager; 3, Darrel Hands; 4, Abolins; 4, Navarro.

Butte Creek Country Club: At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Irma Jenkins proceeded to win the first flight in the Butte Creek CC Women’s Golf Club Stableford tournament with a five-point margin score of 39 points. Karla Dreiss (34) and Karey McKenney (33) finished second and third respectively. Joan Bequette and Betty Dean tied for first place in the second flight with 33 points. Cil Hauer won the third flight with 30 points. Jackie Heal (29 points) took the second spot.

Table Mountain Golf Course: I see Sandy Goble is back in form in the Table Mountain GC Women’s Golf Club weekly tournaments. Goble was overall low gross with a score of 84. Pam Weichert won low net with a score of 66. First flight winners: 1, Sue Snow; 2, Sally Stemen; 3, Janett Ott. Second flight: 1, Elaine Thomas; 2, Kris McGee; 3, Liz Hofeling. Third flight: 1, Jody Thompson; 2, Linda Lindberg; 3, Linda Ginter. Fourth flight: Diane Baker; 2, Jane Sherwood: 3, Cheryl Burnett.

Paradise SIR’s Golf Club: The Paradise SIR’s Golf Club played their semi-monthly tournament at Tuscan Ridge GC. The team of Lloyd Speights, Curtis Stark and Mike Kruger won the three-man, two best-ball flight with a net score of 131. The team of Gary McElroy, Ed Polen, Billy Troegner and Marv Banta and the team of Rudy Melashenko, Dave Roberts, Ralph Johnson and Richard Boulter tied for first in the four-man flight. Clint Williams won closest to the pin. Larry Speck took home the special Priscilla Rawlings prize.

Spectacular shots: Marc Richmond recorded his fifth career ace on the 17th hole at Table Mountain GC. His playing companions, Charlie Dunn, Kim DeHagen and Larry Strand witnessed Richmond’s perfect 125-yard, 9-iron tee shot disappear into the cup.

Mike Fisher achieved his first ever hole-in-one on the No. 4 hole at Bidwell Park GC. Jim Barger, Ron Peterson and Dick Triplett attested to Fisher’s 130-yard, 9-iron tee shot. This was obviously Fisher’s lucky day because four holes later on the 451-yard, par-5, 8th hole his 7-wood, 170-yard approach shot ended up 8-feet from the cup and he proceeded to drain the putt for an eagle three. Two eagles on the front nine. Frame that score card, Mike.

Patton turns 99 years old and takes first | Tee to Green https://www.chicoer.com/2024/02/20/patton-turns-99-years-old-and-takes-first-tee-to-green/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 11:30:36 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4237300 The maintenance crews at all of the local courses have been inundated lately with the tasks of removing downed trees and debris caused from the recent high winds and flooding. This work is even more difficult because the saturated conditions inhibit the effectiveness of the equipment, and, of course, those of us that will play golf in a blizzard sometimes get in their way. Mother Nature must have a thing against golf. Most likely she is into indoor sports like bowling, racket ball and contract bridge.

Bidwell Park Golf Course

The Bidwell Women’s Golf Club was able to sneak in its monthly Pro-Points tournament in spite of the saturated course conditions before Mother Nature took charge again.

First flight low gross: Becky Callas, 91. Low net, Debi McDermont, 73. Second flight low gross: Jolene Nixon, 107. Low net: Margie Rice, 81. Third flight low gross; Susan Pease, 115. Low net: 1, Joan Patton, 85; 2, Linda Mowell, 86; 3, tie, Deena Cooper and Molly Barnum, 87. Closest to the pin on No. 16: Mowell.

Joan Patton turned 99 years old the day of the tournament and took first place low net in the third flight. Definitely one for the ages. I’m sure Elsie is smiling down on Patton’s accomplishment. Congratulations!

Canyon Oaks Country Club

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club managed to complete its 10-week long, 2-person, Eclectic Scramble Tournament on Valentine’s Day, just before the rains came.

Gross division: 1, Karen Escott and Konnie Marskey, 62; 2, Kim Chappell and Mary Wallmark, 65. Net division: 1, Cathy Edgar and Karen Olson, 60.45; 2, Linda Alworth and Cynthia Paulo, 60.5; 2, Vickie Spelts and Nancy Vieira, 61.25; 4, Gina Snider and Nan Wysong, 61.5. Wow! The net scores are close.

Spectacular shots

Although the local tournaments have been few and far in between these days, there has still been plenty of excitement on several local courses.

Debi McDermont garnered her first career hole-in-one on the 4th hole at Bidwell. McDermont selected her 8-iron for a perfect 96-yard tee shot as witnessed by her playing companions, Sandy Sample, Jolene and Richard Nixon.

Jim Barrett was out playing golf on Valentine’s Day, but I’m sure he was forgiven by his wife, Sally, because he earned a $100 stipend from the El Rancho Chico Golf Club for recording his second career hole-in-one. But, unfortunately, he most likely graciously gave most of it back to the Bidwell Bar and Grill in order for the dozen or so members of his playing group, the Bandits, to toast his achievement. Witnessing Barrett’s perfect 108-yard, 9-iron tee shot on the 2nd hole at Bidwell were his playing partners, Jeff Nedved, Don Sturt and Dan White.

There’s little doubt that Don Krysakowski is on a roll. A couple of weeks ago Krysakowski aced the 12th hole at Butte Creek and significantly increased his golf shop credit in the process. Last week he scored an eagle on the par 5, 13th hole at Butte Creek. His 115-yard, 7-iron approach shot finding the bottom of the cup, for a 3 on the score card, was witnessed by his playing partners, Ed Anderson, Gary Crane and Denny Varley. Krysakowski followed-up the eagle with a birdie on 14 and narrowly missed another birdie on 15 by mere inches, because of bad advice from one of his teammates (3 guesses, first 2 don’t count).

Kevin Peppas also scored an eagle at Butte Creek last week. Peppas’s 7-iron, 160-yard approach shot to the 8th hole, disappearing into the cup, was witnessed by Bob Collier, Aaron Rogers and Billy Rogers (the reigning men’s club net champion).

Looking back

With minimal golf news last week, let’s step back 15 years to March, 3, 2009 to see who was winning back then and getting aces.

Butte Creek CC Women’s Golf Club

The team of Irma Jenkins, Barbara Joronen and Ruth Younger won the Butte Creek CC Women’s Golf Club A-B-C Best Ball Tournament last week with a net score of 56. Taking second place, at 64, was the team of Linda Boone, Pay Sayer and Darlene Thomasson.

Skyway Golf Park

Mitch Padula took home all the money Tuesday evening following the Skyway Golf Park weekly skins game. Padula birdied No. 11 for the only skin. Jeff Fowler won closest to the pin contest.

Tuscan Ridge GC

The Tuscan Ridge Thursday Golf League played another round of Mister “X” verses the field for their weekly tournament. This format pits one player (selected by a draw) in a match play contest against all the other players in the field. Tom Kitchen drew the “lucky” card. Kitchen was unable to pull out a win on any of the holes and subsequently went home empty handed. Jim Palmer, Lon Denison and Bob McCormick won two holes each and split the pot three ways.

Canyon Oaks CC

Two weeks ago the Canyon Oaks CC Women’s Golf Club played a scramble format tournament. Lorraine Rupp, Fran Wedow, Karry Drobny and a blind draw took first with a score of 59. The team of Bev Paull, Linda Arellano, Nancy Dooly and Lenora Chapman finished second with a score of 60. Closest to the pin: 1, Elvie Blanchard; 2, Arellano.

Last week the club held a Two Best-Ball Guest Day Tournament. The team of Blanchard, Arellano, Joy Smith and Vickie Spelts took the top spot with a score of 131. Shooting a score of 137 for second place was the team of Sherry Cole, Patty Dummel, Carol Grimes and Karen Hilleman. Closest to pin winners: 1, Arellano; 2, Cole; 3, Blanchard.

Spectacular shots

There’s been a rash of holes-in-one at Bidwell recently. I guess I had better get out there for a round or two and try my luck.

Les Perkins lofted a perfect 7-wood tee shot on the 150-yard, No. 16 hole for his ace. His shot was witnessed by Richard Whitehead and Sam Davis.

Craig Fellner decided the No. 2 hole at Bidwell was too easy and proceeded to put his 112-yard, 9-iron tee shot into the cup. His perfect shot was witnessed by Hal Thommen, Dick Dobkins and Larry Fetchner.

Then along comes Joe Galloway on the difficult, No. 12 hole and (according to Joe) hit a “fat” 7-iron into the hole for his hole-in-one. Hey, I’ll take luck over skill any day. Rich Attinger and Gary Pederson attested to his great tee shot.

Wet course conditions do not deter play | Tee to Green https://www.chicoer.com/2024/02/13/wet-course-conditions-do-not-deter-play-tee-to-green/ Tue, 13 Feb 2024 11:30:35 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4230572 The Butte Creek Men’s Golf Club held a 4-Man Shamble, 2 Net Best-Ball format for its February tournament this past weekend.

A total of 76 players participated in spite of the cart path only restriction. The heavy rain and strong winds earlier in the week played havoc on the course as well as in the north state in general. The superintendent and the grounds crew of all the local golf courses have been extremely busy trying to get their courses cleaned up of down trees and fallen debris.

As an added note, 12 members of the Chico State Wildcat men’s and women’s golf teams came out early Saturday morning to clean up and rake all 47 bunkers on the course, prior to the start of the tournament. Your efforts were much appreciated. Thank you!

The field was divided into three flights. In a shamble format, all players tee off, hit their second shot from the tee shot selected and play their own ball from there on. Players were required to use at least three of their own tee shots. The teams could compete on either Saturday or Sunday of their choosing.

Black tee flight No. 1, Scott Hanosh, Ben Knight, Bob Leckinger, and Pat Pillsbury, 122; 2, Jake Brose, Jim McKenna, Mike O’Donnell and Jason Pezzetti, 125; 3, Justin Bowman, Chris Kobz, Andy Poyner and Adam Stephen, 127. Low gross over the field: Tim Beach, Tadd Brothers, Brian Jones, and Ben Pollock, with a score of 135.

Black tee flight No. 2: 1, Chas Gower, Greg Scott, Mike Wear and Dave Williams, 130; 2, 3-way tie: Mike Bechtol, Bill Kyle, Royal “Aire” Hawkley and Tom Hughes; John Fleshood, Mike Koehnen, Steven Koehnen and Matt Stone, along with the team of Dave Harrison, Greg Martin, John Olsen and Jim Westcott, 132.

White tee flight: 1, tie, Tom Beckman, Cliff Kitayama, Don Krysakowski and Carl Martellaro, along with the team of Ed Anderson, Gary Crane, Mike Lim and Rovane Younger, 134.

Canyon Oaks Country Club

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club held a Nassau Tournament last Saturday. The course was also restricted to cart path only and somewhat saturated conditions like the rest of the courses in our area. First flight: 18 hole low gross, Karen Escott, 90. 18 hole low net: Gayle Hutchinson, 75. Front 9 gross: Cynthia Paulo, 45. Front 9 net: Evie Spring, 35. Back 9 gross: Shelley Carney, 48. Back 9 net: Nancy Vieira, 41.

Second flight: 18 hole gross: Kathy Sullivan, 102. 18 hole net: Lynne Beyers, 81. Front 9 gross, Bonnie Seely, 51. Front 9 net: Sue Heimann, 40. Back 9 gross: Linda Alworth, 56. Back 9 net: Pat Radisich, 41.

Closest to pin on hole No. 6 for first flight: 1, Sally Pearson; 2, Paulo; 3, Linda Arellano. Second flight. Closest to pin on hole No. 6 for second flight: 1, Seely; Heimann; 3, Nancy Dooly.

Spectacular shots

A couple of aces were reported last week. Nicole Briggs had a hole-in-one on the 4th hole at Bidwell. Briggs selected a 7-iron for a perfect 135-yard tee shot into the cup and first ace as witnessed by Ryan Andrew.

Don Krysakowski scored his first ever hole-in-one on the 12th hole at Butte Creek. Krysakowski selected a 5 hybrid for his perfect 140-yard tee shot, as attested by his playing companions, Tom Haber, Mike Lim and Dave Schwartz.

Chico State golf team ranks No. 1 | Tee to Green https://www.chicoer.com/2024/02/06/chico-state-team-ranks-no-1-tee-to-green/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 11:30:28 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4222602 Coach Nick Green is excited about the Chico State men’s golf team’s upcoming spring season. The team is currently ranked No. 1 in the West Region. In the four fall 2023 tournaments, the team took two runner-up spots and won the Wildcat Invitational hosted at Butte Creek. This spring the team will compete in five tournaments, including the NCAA Regional Championship in New Mexico and the NCAA National Finals in Orlando, Florida.

Coach Green’s talented team of 12 young players and their home town are: Tyler Ashman, Clovis; Naoki Easterday, Portland, Ore.; Cooper Hambrick, San Diego; Giuliano Kaminski, Los Gatos; Alexander LemMon, Glen Ellen; Travis Miller, Castro Valley; Ben Mouser, Fresno; Dakota Ochoa, Bakersfield; Brayden Russo, Chico; Ethan Schloss, Reno, Nev.; Giacomo Sorrentino, Davis; Landon Williams, Chico.

Green is no newcomer to the game of golf. He is in his eighth year as the head coach for the Wildcat men’s golf team. Prior to taking over the helm of the men’s program, Green was the women’s golf team coach for three years and the assistant men’s coach before under Coach T.L. Brown. Green is a standout player in his own right, having played on the very successful Chico State golf team in 2003-2007, and also earning all-state honors in high school in Las Vegas, Nevada for his golf talent, as well as accolades in basketball. Many of us recall Green for his professionalism and golf expertise while working briefly at the Bidwell Park Golf Course golf shop prior to assuming the role as the men’s head coach at Chico State. Good luck, Nick, to you and your team this coming season!

Bidwell Park Golf Course

The Bidwell Park Women’s Golf Club held a unique type format for its weekly game. The game was a 3-player, “In the Bucket.” Try this format on for size. On the first hole all three net scores are counted; however, the score of the player with the lowest net score of the three is not counted on the next hole. Only the score of the other two players is counted. On the third hole, only the score of the player with the highest score on the previous hole is counted and is therefore considered the player in the bucket. It’s stand-alone, do or die, for the lone player, under just a little pressure, you think. The rotation process starts over on the fourth hole. This format could also be played as a foursome, making it even more challenging.

First flight low gross: Kelly MacKinnon, 80. Second flight low gross: Linda Jones, 105; Third flight low gross: Molly Barnum, 110. Game: 1, Becky Callas, Sheila McMurphy and Debi McDermont, 70; 2, Jones, Judy Cato and Barnum, 72.4; 3, Gayle Aylward, Pam Coleman and Barbara Albers, 72.67.

The El Rancho Chico Golf Club was able to play its first 2024 tournament before the rains hit.

The format for the 18 four-player teams was one best ball net plus one best ball gross. The field was divided into two flights playing from the white and yellow tees. White tee flight: 1, Mike Janke, Ari Rutherford, Kyle Utterback and Rich Utterback, 131; 2, Tony Allspaugh, Ben Heerema, Dave Koistinen and Jeff Nedved, 135; 3, Adam Almand, Ben Presley, Ron Serna and Jimmy Smith, 137; 4, Rob Dunlap, Rio Gates, Jon Reddick and Travis Shute, 139; 5, Matt Ferguson, Todd Martin, Miles Teagarden, and Duke Warren, 141.

Yellow Tee flight: 1, Jim Barrett, Craig Fellner, Craig Herman and Eric Sargent, 139; 2, Randy Cook, Lloyd Hightower, Tod Kimmelshue and Rob Sylvester (I’ll have more on Sylvester later) 141; 3, Art Gausemel, Pat Goodwin, Phil Jones and Rich Lash, 142; 4, Bill Allen, A.J. Haggard, David Koch and Jim Marler, 144.

Closest to the pin winners: Hole No. 2, Darrell Hands (within the leather); Hole No. 4, Gates; Hole No. 7, Don Davidson; Hole No. 12, Gates….again; Hole No. 16, Davidson…again. How about this: Sylvester aced the 12th hole, but did not received CTP credit because the 12th hole was only for the white tee flight players. However, Sylvester did buy drinks around and if the entire field took advantage of his generosity, the $100 he received from the ERCGC for his hole-in-one didn’t come close to covering the bar tab.

Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club

The Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club held a four-player “Choker Ball” Scramble format at Bidwell last week for its semi-monthly tournament, which definitely put some “pressure” on the player assigned the choker ball. A different player was assigned the choker player on each hole while the other three played a scramble. The scramble score and the choker ball score were counted for the team score.

Forty-six members turned out for the tournament, and in spite of the pressure format, the scores were close. 1, Dave Barnum, Larry Hildenbrand, Mike Lim and Jim Weidert, 133.7; 2, Ken Glaziner, Kyle Glaziner, Keith Martinson and Dick Parsons, 134.2; 3, Ed Anderson (guest), Craig Herman, Lloyd Lee and Don Sturt, 134.7; 4, Bob Browning, Jim Cagno, Joe Gallaway and Jim Bondon, 140.8. Thank you for letting me join you. I enjoyed it immensely.

Closest to pin Contest: Hole No. 2: 1, Gary White; 2, Alex Van Patten; Hole No. 4, 1, Herman; 2, Lee; Hole No. 7; 1, Darrell Hands; 2, Lim; Hole No. 12; 1, Ken Glaziner; 2, Weidert; Hole No. 16; 1, Mark Hyder; 2, Weidert.

Spectacular shots

As noted above, Rob Sylvester aced the challenging, 146-yard, 12th hole at Bidwell during the El Rancho Chico Golf Club tournament, much to the delight of his teammates Randy Cook, Lloyd Hightower and Tod Kimmelshue. No doubt Sylvester’s great tee shot helped propel his team into second place in their flight.

Significant achievement

Denny Varley shot a nice round of 81, a stroke or two under his age, during a Butte Creek Senior Men’s Club outing last week, much to the delight of his teammates. Varley undoubtedly took home most of the financial dividends from the rest of the players for his efforts. Some days the cup looks the size of a wash tub and on other days it appears more like a thimble.

Commentary

This month marks the start of my 21st year of writing the golf column for the Enterprise-Record. I would like to thank all of you who take the time to compile and forward me the results of tournaments and other interesting bits of information to include in the column. At the risk of leaving someone out, I would like to recognize the following individuals for keeping me informed: Craig Fellner (ERCMGC); Darrell Hands and Doug Shook (Chico-Paradise SIR’s); Derrick Schultz and Tom Fegley (BCCC); Bob Kromer, (COCC Sr. Men’s Club); Dana Blanton, Sally Stemen, Sue Snow and other members of the Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club; Peter Davis, (TMMGC); Cortney Foster, (BPGC); Tom Pyeatt and Terry Taylor, (COCC); Jakki Thomas, COCC Women’s Golf Club). Your efforts are very, very much appreciated. I’m not sure how long Milan Murray and Ted Blofsky had this job during their tenure with the E-R, but I might be gaining on it. Thank you!

Ed Anderson’s local golf column appears Tuesdays. He can be reached at edanderson1936@gmail.com.

Good turnout for Butte Creek men’s club tourney | Tee to Green https://www.chicoer.com/2024/01/30/good-turnout-for-butte-creek-mens-club-tourney-tee-to-green/ Tue, 30 Jan 2024 11:25:33 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4216109 Fifty-six players turned out to participate in the Butte Creek Men’s Golf Club opening tournament of 2024. The format was a 2-man scramble on the front nine and a modified Scotch on the back nine.

The team of Andy Poyner and Justin Bowman took low net in the first flight with a score of 62.61 and also tied for low gross at 68. Taking second low net was the team of Brian McGovern and Bob Sylvester at 63.42 and also tied for low gross. Finishing in the third spot was the team of Brian Jones and Phil Jones at 65.56.

Fourth place: Tyler Collier and Billy Rogers at 66.99 and also tying for low gross. Rounding out the payout spots in the first flight for fifth place was the team of Ben Knight and Scott Hanosh with a net score of 67.09.

Third flight: 1, Matt Stone and Steven Koehnen, 64.3; 2, Tom Hughes and Mark Blofsky, 66.08; 3, Bob Bunting and Tyler Quackenbush, 66.73; 4, John Olsen and Dave Harrison, 68.11; 5, Greg Harrison and Bruce Whitegiver, 68.75. The team of McGovern and Sylvester along with the team of Mike Wear and Chad Parker cashed in on the skin money, which we will keep to ourselves because of tax implications — just saying. The team of Stone and Koehnen won the horse race contest. Two teams tied for second place in the horse race contest: Jones and Jones along with Bunting and Quackenbush.

The Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club held an ABC One Best Ball format for its weekly game. Taking first was the team of Sherri Kimmelshue, Paula Kokal and Susie Westcott with a score of 61. The team of Tami Blofsky, Paula Rich and a blind draw took second at 63. Rounding out the payoff spots in third place was the team of Karla Dreiss, JoAnne Rutledge and a blind draw with a score of 65.

Spectacular shots

Steve Haws chalked up his second hole-in-one at Butte Creek last week in between rain storms. Haws was playing with his companions, Dave Schwartz, Jeff Fontana, Tom Haber and Sammy Glass, Jr when he hit a perfect, 127-yard, 8 iron into the cup on the 17th hole. Drinks were on the house and he also earned a nice credit on his account in the golf shop. Congratulations!

What a difference in the weather these days from 10 years ago. Let’s look back to Jan. 28, 2014 and see the news and names that were in the golf column back then.
