The El Rancho Chico Golf Club held its 4-Man, North Zone Qualifying Tournament last Sunday. Two flights participated in the tournament, but only the teams playing from the white tees were eligible to compete for the right to represent Bidwell in the zone finals in Monterey. White tees: 1, Matt Ferguson, Todd Martin, Miles Tegarden and Duke Warren, 130; 2, Mike Barney, Ben Heerema, Jeff Nedved and Eric Sargent, 131; 3, Rob Dunlap, Rio Gates, Jon Rettig and Travis Shute, 138; 4, Adam Almond, Chas Gower, Ron Serna and Dave Williams, 138.
The winning team declined to move on to the zone finals, therefore the second place team will represent Bidwell, April 8-9 in Monterey at the Del Monte and Poppy Hills courses. For some reason, the popularity of this qualifying tournament has declined over the years. It could be the cost of travel and staying in Monterey several days may be one of the deterrents, albeit the ERCGC pays the tournament entry fee.
Yellow tee flight: 1, Craig Fellner, Craig Herman, Vic Mitchell and Dan White, 124; 2, Art Gausemel, Pat Goodwin, Phil Jones and Rich Lash, 127; 3, Randy Cook, Lloyd Hightower, Tod Kimmelshue and Rob Sylvester, 130; 4, Bill Allen, AJ Haggard, Jim Marler and Roy Peters, 132.
Closest to the pin contest: Hole No. 2; Herman, No. 7: Jones; No. 12: Rettig; No. 16: Jon Carlson.
Sticking close to home, the Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club played a 4-Man Scramble format at Bidwell for its semi-monthly tournament. 1, Sam Davis, Craig Herman, Ed Main and Gary White, 59.7; 2, Paul Brossoit, Jeff Eber, Mark Hyder and Glen Pertuit, 62.8; 3, Kyle Glaziner, Jack Knowlton, Dick Parsons and Steve Velasco, 64.6. The closest to pin contest was pretty much dominated by Hyder: No. 2: 1, Alex Van Patten; 2, Hyder. No. 4: 1, Main; 2, Hyder, No. 7: Pertuit, No. 16: Hyder.
The Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club played an Irish 4-Ball Stableford Tournament for its weekly game. Holes 1-6 were 1 best-ball, holes 7-11 were 2 best balls, holes12-15 were 3 best-balls and holes 16-18 were 4 best-balls. Tough format for sure. Taking first with a team score of 79 points, was the team of Cyndi Bailey, Barbara Joronen, Sherri Kimmelshue, and Ruth Younger.
The weekly game for the Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club was called “Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda,” allowing the players to have three mulligans (do overs) during the round. Closest to pin on No. 6: 1, Spelts; 2, Lynne Beyers; 3, Arellano.
Morgan Pitman gave the USC Monterey golf coach another reason to be thankful Pitman will be enrolled there next fall. Pitman qualified for the San Francisco City Championship and then proceeded to defeat the No. 1 seed, who was also the medalist in the qualifying round, 4-and-3 in her first match. She lost in her quarterfinal match 2-down, but nevertheless, pretty amazing for the Pleasant Valley High School senior.
John Hayes started his round off in grand style at Butte Creek last week. Hayes holed out his 106-yard, pitching wedge approach shot on the opening hole for an eagle two. His perfect shot was witnessed by his playing companion, Rex Boylan.
The Canyon Oaks CC Women’s Golf Club recently held their annual age bracket tournament, but since discretion takes precedence over courage when it comes to valor I will omit the age categories and identify the winners by the name of the flight and in no particular order, smart huh? Nancy Vieira was low gross in the Augusta flight. Sally Pearson was low net. Susan Wever and Nancy Taylor finished in the second and third spot. Ellie Fairchild was low gross in the Canyon Oaks flight. Low net went to Yasuko Zingg. June Park and Karen Escott tied for second place. Low gross in the Pebble Beach flight was Pat Radisich. Susan Moon shot the low net score. Jackie Drakulic and Lenora chapman tied for second. The closest to the pin winner on hole No. 6 was Kathleen Seppanen. Wever won on hole No. 11. Moon took the award on the 14 hole.
Sally Pearson won both low gross and low net in the first flight of the Canyon Oaks CC Women’s Golf Club weekly outing. Joan Wagoner followed suit in the second flight with both the low gross and low net scores. In their game portion the low net winners in the first flight were: 1, Pearson; 2, Nan Wysong; 3, Ellie Fairchild; 4, Vickie Spelts. The Bidwell Park GC Women’s Golf Club held a four-clubs and a putter tournament for their weekly outing. Jean Rolls posted the low gross score in the fourth flight. Wendy Donahoo took low net.
