The Pleasant Valley girls basketball team needed four quarters plus an overtime period Tuesday to defeat No. 14 Vista del Lago 56-49 in the first round of the CIF Division II state playoffs in Chico.

It was the second win of the season for third-seeded PV against Vista del Lago, as the Vikings defeated the Eagles on Nov. 30.

Vista Del Lago led 10-6 after the first quarter and 22-16 at halftime, but PV took a 36-34 lead after the third quarter. The two teams were tied 45-45 entering OT, but the Vikings outscored Eagles 11-4 in OT.

With 1 minute and 35 seconds left in overtime, Maddux Wilson made a 3-pointer from the corner to give PV a 52-47 lead, bringing the home crowd to its feet.

AJ Gambol led PV with 24 points, Wilson had 11 points, and Caitlyn Vickery had nine points and played an integral role on defense. Vickery made 7-of-10 free throws, while forcing several key jump balls down the stretch. Ava Dunn led PV with eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

PV head coach Bob Paddock said the difference in the two halves, and leading into overtime, was PV’s transition defense.

“The first half we just weren’t getting back, and for some reason we had that layover from Saturday and carried that into the first half,” Paddock said. “We didn’t that great of D, we didn’t shoot very well, and Saturday we shot lights out. In the second half I told them you got to get back on D, got to attack the rim, get good shots, and get second chances.”
