City officials plan to propose a five-year, $97 million extension of the team’s lease with an opt-out after three years, according to documents obtained by ESPN and ABC7. Even if the team leaves after three years, the city’s proposal would require the A’s to pay the full amount.

That creates a significant gulf between what the city is asking and what the A’s have offered — a two-year deal worth $17 million, according to ESPN’s report, which stated that the current lease is $1.5 million per year. If they stay the full five years, the annual cost would be $19.4 million; if they opt out, it would be $32.3 million.

A major incentive for the A’s to stay in Oakland is the reported $67 million in annual revenue from the team’s deal to broadcast games on NBC Sports California. If the team were to leave for Sacramento, one of two cities it has targeted outside of Oakland and Las Vegas, it could potentially continue broadcasting games on that channel for at least a portion of that deal.

This week’s meeting will be the third in a series of discussions since the sides began extension talks in February.

The opt-out after three years would align with the A’s targeted date of opening their proposed stadium on the Las Vegas Strip in time for the 2028 season, though the Tropicana still sits on that site. The casino is set to close Tuesday as organizers begin preparing to demolish it, but the team still could be delayed by legal challenges to the $380 million in public funding earmarked for the stadium, which would be MLB’s smallest.

Oakland also asks that the A’s sell their 50% share of the Coliseum as part of the deal. Additionally, the city plans to ask MLB to commit to a year-long exclusive window to negotiate for an expansion team if and when the league does add franchises or a vote to leave the A’s brand in Oakland. A third alternative, per ESPN, would be to facilitate the team’s sale to a local buyer, but Fisher has said repeatedly that he does not plan to sell the A’s, despite fans’ protests.

SF Giants will use Cal Poly public-address announcer vs. A’s https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/26/sf-giants-will-use-cal-poly-public-address-announcer-vs-as/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 23:32:17 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4343612&preview=true&preview_id=4343612 The first of the Giants’ rotating voices following the departure of longtime public-address announcer Renel Brooks-Moon will be Carolyn “CJ” Silas, who is set to announce Tuesday night’s Bay Bridge Series game against the A’s.

Silas is the baseball announcer in San Luis Obispo for Cal Poly, where she is in her 22nd season calling Mustangs games. Silas has also called minor-league games for the Blue Jays’ and Yankees’ affiliates in New York state.

Team president Larry Baer said last week during the Giants’ open house ahead of the season that the club would use a rotation of announcers in the immediate aftermath of Brooks-Moon’s departure after 24 seasons behind the microphone. Brooks-Moon had been the team’s public-address announcer since the Giants moved to their waterfront stadium now known as Oracle Park.

The split with Brooks-Moon, announced last week, was billed as amicable after contract negotiations stalled, but it drew backlash from some fans and observers less than two weeks before Opening Day.

The Giants did not specify who else would be in the rotation along with Silas, though Baer said last week that he expects the team to begin its search for a new PA announcer soon. The Giants open the season Thursday in San Diego and host the Padres for their own home opener on April 5.

Oakland Coliseum Authority approves Roots and Soul to play 2025 home games at stadium https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/15/oakland-coliseum-authority-approves-roots-and-soul-to-play-2025-home-games-at-stadium/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 18:48:44 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4264562&preview=true&preview_id=4264562 The Oakland Roots and Oakland Soul will play their home games next season within the city of Oakland.

The Oakland Coliseum Authority voted unanimously (6-0) Friday morning to approve hosting the soccer clubs’ home games at the Coliseum in 2025.

The Roots and Soul are playing this season at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, where they also played last year in the Soul’s inaugural season after the Roots played their first four years at Laney College.

The Roots compete in the USL Championship, a second-division men’s league, while the Soul plays in the USL W League, a fourth-division pre-professional women’s league, but plans to join a new Division I league, the USL Super League, in 2025. The men’s team is playing a 34-game schedule this season, while the women’s team is playing 12 games.

It is unclear what impact, if any, the scheduling of soccer games will have on the city and Coliseum’s negotiations with the A’s to extend their lease beyond 2024 as they seek a relocation to Las Vegas, where their proposed stadium won’t open until 2028.

The A’s and Oakland officials met Thursday to discuss a potential lease extension and will meet again early next month, though the A’s have also met with officials from Sacramento and Salt Lake City.

The soccer teams and the stadium’s governing body must still negotiate on the specific terms of the agreement.

Steph Curry cleared to return to Warriors’ practices as ankle heals https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/12/steph-curry-cleared-to-return-to-warriors-practices-as-ankle-heals/ Tue, 12 Mar 2024 21:06:13 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4261871&preview=true&preview_id=4261871 Stephen Curry won’t play for the Warriors tomorrow night against the Mavericks, but he has not been ruled out of the Warriors’ next game, another showdown against a team currently slotted into the play-in tournament.

Curry, who rolled his ankle in last week’s loss to the Bulls, has been cleared to return to on-court activities and will be re-evaluated again Friday before Saturday’s game against the Lakers, the Warriors announced Tuesday.

The Lakers currently sit in ninth place, one game ahead of the Warriors in the Western Conference standings, and Dallas is 2.5 games in front of the Dubs in eighth place. With 18 games left in Golden State’s regular season, these games could prove crucial in determining whether the Warriors will get two shots at securing a playoff spot, or if they’ll be at risk of elimination in the No. 9-vs.-No. 10 game.

The Warriors just won without Curry for the first time in five tries this season, beating the Spurs in San Antonio on Monday night, two days after losing to them in San Francisco.

Of course, the clearance to return to the court is not a guarantee Curry will play Saturday.

Following Saturday’s game, the Warriors will return home to face the Knicks (March 18), Grizzlies (March 20) and Pacers (March 22) before heading to Minnesota and the Southeast.

49ers QB Brock Purdy marries college sweetheart Jenna Brandt https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/10/49ers-qb-brock-purdy-marries-college-sweetheart-jenna-brandt/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 21:36:47 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4259996&preview=true&preview_id=4259996 Jenna Brandt is now Mrs. Irrelevant.

She married her college beau, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa, less than a month after Purdy capped his second NFL season with a Super Bowl appearance.

More than 350 people were in attendance, according to TMZ.

Purdy, a Phoenix-area native, and Brandt, born and raised in Iowa, both attended Iowa State, where Purdy led the Cyclones to four consecutive winning seasons before the 49ers selected him with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

While Purdy led the Cyclones on the football field, Brandt was a multi-sport athlete, playing volleyball and competing in track and field before transferring to Northern Iowa.

The couple announced their engagement last July, just weeks before the Niners began training camp for last season. Purdy credited Brandt with planning the wedding while he was focused primarily on game plans over the intervening months.

“Jenna’s done a great job with the wedding plans. Obviously, we got engaged in the summer and then boom, the season hit, so for me it’s been obviously football and trying to win every week,” he said at last month’s Super Bowl Opening Night.

“She’s done such a tremendous job. When I come home and we just talk about the little things of the wedding, and honestly it’s helped me with football to sort of get my mind off football and we have our time to talk about the wedding and what our future looks like, so it’s something that we’ve loved the whole process of.”

Purdy also said in a recent interview with Brad Cesmat of Sports360AZ that he had more nerves — or at least different ones — about getting married to Brandt, his “best friend,” than he did in the days leading up to the 49ers’ eventual Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs last month.

“I get to marry my best friend, and so does she, and we get to go do life together. So a little bit more nerve-wracking, I’d say, than playing in a game, like the Super Bowl,” he said. “… The Super Bowl — for me, I tried to keep it simple. It’s been a football game I’ve played my whole life. Yes, it’s probably the biggest game I’ve ever played in, but I feel like just the nerves are slightly different compared to getting married.”

Warriors: Curry’s ankle injury won’t be long-term, per report https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/08/warriors-currys-ankle-injury-wont-be-long-term-per-report/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 21:37:01 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4258802&preview=true&preview_id=4258802 The Warriors are not expected to deliver an official update Friday on star guard Steph Curry’s ankle injury, but an early report suggests they believe he avoided serious harm.

Those around Curry and the Warriors have “optimism his absence will not be lengthy,” The Athletic’s Shams Charania tweeted Friday afternoon, noting that he will miss at least a game and possibly more. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said an MRI on Curry’s ankle “returned clean.”

The Warriors have officially ruled Curry out of Saturday night’s game against the Spurs on their injury report submitted to the league Friday. Trayce Jackson-Davis is questionable and San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama is out. Like Curry, both rookies are battling right ankle sprains.

Curry rolled his right ankle in the fourth quarter of the Warriors’ loss Thursday night to the Bulls as he collected a pass and looked to move the ball while cutting toward the Chicago basket. He left the game with just under four minutes remaining and did not return.

Curry, 35, struggled with ongoing ankle issues early in his career but gained enough traction to become a two-time MVP and the offensive catalyst for the Warriors’ four championship teams over the last decade.

He has played in 59 of the Warriors’ 62 games this season. Golden State faces San Antonio at Chase Center at 5:30 Saturday night, then will play the Spurs on the road Monday before facing the Mavericks in Dallas on Wednesday.

The Warriors are solidly in the play-in tournament at this point, percentage points ahead of the Lakers for ninth place. They are 3.5 games behind the Suns for sixth place and 5.5 games ahead of the Jazz in 11th place. Dallas is 1.5 games ahead in the No. 8 seed.

SF Giants-Brewers: Bats pick up Webb after tough first inning; another pitcher likely out for Opening Day https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/05/sf-giants-brewers-bats-pick-up-webb-after-tough-first-inning-another-pitcher-likely-out-for-opening-day/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 00:06:11 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4254763&preview=true&preview_id=4254763 Logan Webb struggled through the first inning, but the Giants came back to beat the Brewers 13-8 Tuesday at Scottsdale Stadium by roughing up a familiar face and the NL’s reigning reliever of the year.

Webb allowed four first-inning runs to put the Giants in a hole early, then settled in to strike out the side in the second before allowing a third-inning home run to Rhys Hoskins. He has allowed at least two runs in each of his three outings this spring, but struck out six this time out, recording 31 strikes on 32 pitches.

After falling behind, the Giants hit former teammate Jakob Junis hard in the bottom of the third as Thairo Estrada and Jorge Soler had RBI singles before Wade Meckler brought them both around with his own single. An inning later, Michael Conforto hit an RBI double off two-time All-Star Devin Williams, then Wilmer Flores brought in two runs with his own double to chase Williams.

Tom Murphy, Meckler and Luis Matos each brought home a run against Milwaukee reliever Ryan Middendorf. Meckler later recorded a third RBI in the fifth inning to cap a game that started with a throwing error when he was playing center field.

Taylor Rogers gave the Giants a scoreless fifth inning after walking the leadoff batter, then his brother took over the sixth, allowed a leadoff double to Jackson Chourio and forced three groundouts (one of which scored Chourio).

Wednesday will be the Giants’ first off day since games started in Cactus League a week and a half ago. Thursday night, they’ll host the division rival Dodgers, the toast of the offseason after adding Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

HJELLE ON ICE

Sean Hjelle, the 6-foot-11 former second-round draft pick, has starting experience, but limited success –  11-21 with a 5.51 ERA in 51 starts over three seasons at Triple-A and is viewed mostly as a reliever these days.

Tristan Beck’s injury might have changed some opinions about Hjelle’s role, but now he’ll almost certainly open the season on the IL.

The Giants announced Tuesday that Hjelle has an elbow sprain and won’t throw again until he is reevaluated in two weeks. Hjelle told reporters he felt discomfort during his most recent outing last week and an MRI exam didn’t reveal any structural damage.

“We don’t want things to linger, so hopefully it’s just the two weeks,” manager Bob Melvin told reporters before the Giants’ Cactus League game against the Brewers. “As a reliever, it’s easier to ramp up, so we’ll see where we are toward the end of camp, but it’s not ideal.”

In other medical news:

– Beck underwent successful surgery on Tuesday at Stanford Medical Center to remove the aneurysm in his upper right arm. He won’t throw for at least eight weeks.

– Infielder Casey Schmitt, who suffered a sprained left ankle last week, has been cleared to resume workouts and is listed as day-to-day.

– Winn, whose camp has been slowed by a sore elbow, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Three Bay Area News Group sports reporters honored for excellence in 2023 https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/01/three-bay-area-news-group-sports-reporters-honored-for-excellence-in-2023/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 17:00:27 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4250765&preview=true&preview_id=4250765 A Bay Area News Group sports reporter was named this week as one of the 10 best national beat writers of 2023 by the Associated Press Sports Editors and two more were honored for writing excellent feature stories published last year.

Jason Mastrodonato and Jerry McDonald each were among the 10 finalists in short feature storytelling for their work on matters of life and death in the realm of sports, while Jon Wilner’s reporting on the downfall of the Pac-12 gained him the distinction of being a finalist for national beat writing.

Jason Mastrodonato is a sports reporter for the Bay Area News Group.

Mastrodonato’s submission was an April story about former Giants pitching coach Andrew Bailey, who blew a save at Fenway Park on April 15, 2013, delaying an exodus of fans — and the players’ wives — from the stadium to the Boston Marathon finish line, where 40 minutes after the final pitch, two bombs exploded.

“A couple weeks later I had people come up to me and say, ‘You saved my life.’ It’s happened on more occasions than you’d think,” Bailey told Mastrodonato. “It was the best blown save I ever had.”

McDonald’s entry was a September feature on 49ers senior adviser and former linebacker Keena Turner, who credits a mandate enacted by general manager John Lynch for saving his life. When Lynch and Kyle Shanahan arrived in 2017, Lynch established an annual physical for members of the personnel department. Turner’s 2022 physical showed an aortic aneurysm, which necessitated a surgery — though Turner held out for a year.

Turner was back at work in two months, even dropping to the ground and doing pushups at training camp.

“My mindset going in was, ‘If I wake up, I’m good to go,’” Turner told McDonald. “To be cracked is painful, but I was good with it. I didn’t waste a lot of time thinking about the road back. I just said, ‘Let’s go.’”

Wilner’s submission featured five stories, ranging from his breakdown in the immediate aftermath of the Pac-12’s dissolution to piecing together how the Pac-12 Networks ended up receiving overpayment from Comcast, and why the overpayment grew into a scandal.

The other stories that earned Wilner the recognition were a report uncovering documents that changed the tenor of Washington State and Oregon State’s lawsuit against the departing schools, an analysis of the 12 biggest steps that led the conference to its bitter end and a thought experiment looking a decade into the future at how realignment may bring the Pac-12 back together again.

The winners in each category are expected to be announced in mid-April.

Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame unveils star-studded Class of 2024 https://www.chicoer.com/2024/02/20/bay-area-sports-hall-of-fame-unveils-star-studded-class-of-2024/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 18:38:35 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4238911&preview=true&preview_id=4238911 The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame on Tuesday unveiled a Class of 2024 that is as diverse as it was successful.

The group includes Olympic gold medal winners, league champions, record breakers, franchise architects, and MVPs. One member of the class will be the first representative from his team in the 46-year history of the BASHOF.

The star-studded class: Brian Sabean (Giants), Jenny Thompson (swimming), Patrick Marleau (Sharks), John Taylor (49ers) and Chris Wondolowski (Quakes).

“We are extremely excited to induct the 2024 class into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame (BASHOF),” said Mario Alioto, Board Chair of BASHOF in a release. “Each of these individuals has achieved a rare level of success during their careers and helped bring worldwide attention to the Bay Area.

“It’s especially gratifying that this class also recognizes athletes in several sports that have been historically underrepresented in BASHOF relative to their positive impact on the greater Bay Area community.”

The class will be enshrined on May 6 during a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero in San Francisco, with a portion of the proceeds of the event benefiting Special Olympics Northern California.

Here’s a look at the Class of 2024:

Marleau is the Sharks’ all-time leading scorer and the NHL’s all-time leader in games played. Marleau played his final NHL season in 2020-21 with the Sharks. Marleau was 17 when he was the second overall pick in the 1997 draft. He was a four-time NHL All-Star and won two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada (2010 and ‘14) and the World Cup of Hockey gold medal in 2004. He’s the second Sharks player to join the BASHOF, joining Owen Nolan.

Sabean is the longest-tenured general manager in San Francisco, overseeing the franchise for 20 seasons. He was the chief architect in the franchise’s three World Series titles in five seasons (2010, ‘12 and ‘14)  and his teams reached the playoffs seven times. He was named the MLB Executive of the Year award in 2003.

Thompson starred at Stanford, amassing 19 individual and relay NCAA titles over her career from 1991-1995, earning the honor of the outstanding college female swimmer of the year in her senior season. On the international stage, the Danvers, Massachusetts native won 12 Olympic medals (eight gold) across four Olympic Games between 1992 and 2004.

Wondolowski, a Danville native and De La Salle graduate, is Major League Soccer’s all-time leading goal scorer after tallying 171 over his 17-year career, primarily with the San Jose Earthquakes. He won two MLS Cups with the Houston Dynamo and led the Quakes to two Supporters’ Shields, capturing the league’s Golden Boot in 2010 for most goals scored and tying for the lead in 2012. Wondo is the first Earthquake to be named to the BASHOF.

Taylor played key roles on the 49ers’ three most recent Super Bowl-winning teams 1988 (XXIII), 1989 (XXIV), 1994 (XXIX). He caught the winning touchdown pass from Joe Montana in the closing seconds of Super Bowl XXIII against the Bengals. Taylor was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was named to the NFL’s 1980’s All-Decade Team.

Warriors tried to acquire LeBron James at trade deadline: report https://www.chicoer.com/2024/02/14/warriors-tried-to-acquire-lebron-james-at-trade-deadline-report/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 16:05:27 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4232674&preview=true&preview_id=4232674 Draymond Green’s long-gestating bromance with LeBron James took a more direct turn in the hours before the NBA trade deadline.

Green pushed Warriors owner Joe Lacob to reach out to the Lakers about acquiring James, according to a Wednesday report from ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Adrian Wojnarowski that cited unnamed sources. Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka both rebuffed the Warriors’ advances, the report says, but Buss referred the Dubs to Rich Paul, James’ client, for his thoughts.

Paul, the CEO of Klutch Sports, also happens to represent Green, who reached out to him directly, as did the Warriors. Klutch is known to engineer team-ups of its clients, but in this instance, James reportedly declined the Warriors’ advances via Paul.

The entire saga stemmed from two things: James passively pressuring the Lakers ahead of the deadline, as he has done with his teams many times before; and the Warriors’ desire to amplify Steph Curry’s prime. Well, that and Green’s willingness to be a staunch recruiter — a skill he last showcased to great effect when the Warriors landed Kevin Durant from Oklahoma City in 2016.

In the end, the Warriors never even reached the point of offering a specific package of players and picks for James, 39, but the outreach (and the leaking of the report) indicates that they still aim to go all-in on the 35-year-old Curry’s prime.

Curry is still performing at an extremely high level, shooting 42.1 percent on 3-point attempts and averaging 28.0 points per game. He has also stayed relatively healthy despite taking on the third-highest usage rate of his career at 30.3 percent (behind 2020-21, when Klay Thompson was injured, and 2015-16, when the team was chasing the regular-season wins record).

The Warriors also reached out to the Bulls and Jazz about Alex Caruso and Kelly Olynyk, respectively, according to multiple reports. In the end, they traded Cory Joseph to the Pacers in a deal that also included cash and a swap of second-round picks, choosing to ride with a core that currently has them on a five-game win streak. The Lakers are one game ahead of the Warriors in ninth and tenth place in the West — the last two play-in spots.

James’ rumored discontent with the Lakers suggests he could opt out of his contract in L.A. this summer, but the Warriors — who have the league’s highest payroll this season — are not a realistic fit under the NBA’s salary cap rules.
