NORD — Butte County Sheriff’s Office deputies swarmed California Street in the small community of Nord on Wednesday morning after receiving a call regarding a man making threats to kill himself and his two children, ages 2 and 7.
Carl Ackerman, 39, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, criminal threats, false imprisonment, felony child endangerment and being in possession of ammunition as a felon, said Butte County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Megan McMann. He was booked into the Butte County Jail.

The incident began at around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday at the 5500 block of California Street. At around 7 a.m., Ackerman left his home through the front door with his children and was arrested without incident, McMann said.
According to the Butte County Superior Court records website, Ackerman was due in court for a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday after being charged with assault and battery, abandonment and neglect of children, and false imprisonment.
Ammunition was found at the scene but no firearm, McCann said.
Before the arrest, deputies made multiple attempts to contact Ackerman but were unsuccessful. Representatives from Butte County Behavioral Health were also called to the scene.
Additionally, law enforcement personnel from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and the Crisis Negotiation team were dispatched to the scene, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the Sheriff’s Office.
Ackerman’s bail was set at $215,500.
