CHICO — A man was stabbed in the abdomen Wednesday near the building that once housed The Graduate at 344 W. Eighth St. after another man threatened to steal his bike.

The incident began as an attempted robbery when the Anthony McEnespy-Mendoza, 21, of Chico, demanded the bike and when denied it, McEnespy-Mendoza struck the cyclist in the head with a metal water bottle, according to a press release from the Chico Police Department. The two men then got into a physical fight. Both men pulled out knives during the fight and the cyclist was stabbed.

The man who was stabbed in the abdomen told police that the stabber left with his bike, which he attempted to ride away on, though it was recovered after McEnespy-Mendoza was detained, according to the release.

The release said McEnespy-Mendoza was also stabbed in the hand.

Both men were taken to a local hospital to be treated, where it was determined that neither wound was life-threatening.

After being cleared by medical personnel, McEnespy-Mendoza was arrested and transported to the Butte County Jail on suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
