ALAMEDA — For three quarters anyway, the Raiders put it all together.
That puts the Raiders only a quarter away from the kind of complete game it may take to beat the New York Jets.
“It’s not like we arrived or anything,” coach Jack Del Rio said Monday at his weekly media briefing, assessing the previous day’s 37-29 win over the San Diego Chargers. “It’s certainly the best football we’ve played to date, so we’re going to acknowledge where it was good and point to things that weren’t as good and talk about the growth and opportunities that are there in front of us.”
First up are the Jets, smarting from a 30-23 loss to the unbeaten New England Patriots. The Jets, under first-year coach Todd Bowles, are 4-2 with an old-school run-heavy offense and a defense that ranks among the NFL’s elite in just about every statistical category.
The Jets were 4-12 last season and, like the Raiders, consider themselves an aspiring playoff team that is running second in its division to an unbeaten team. The matchup Sunday at O.co Coliseum will probably be the closest thing to a playoff atmosphere since the Raiders found themselves a win away from the playoffs to close out the 2011 season.
Six games into the season, both teams have already equaled their 2014 win totals and are brimming with confidence.
The Raiders and Jets opened the 2014 season against each other in the Meadowlands when the head coaches were Dennis Allen and Rex Ryan, with New York dominating statistically (402 yards to 158) and frustrating rookie quarterback Derek Carr in his first NFL start.
The Jets won 19-14, and Del Rio has begun the process of mining that film for nuggets that could prove helpful Sunday.
“You see individuals that are still playing, some in different roles, and see where there are similarities,” Del Rio said. “Maybe get some impressions of them and get some impressions of how we matched up with them, some of the thoughts they may have about us. Just taking a peek.”
It’s already a much more intriguing game than it figured to be based on last season’s results.
“If we linger on this game (against the Patriots) we’re going to get beat,” Bowles said Monday at his weekly news conference. “Oakland played a heck of a ballgame (against San Diego). We know we have to move on. We know what kind of fight we have.”
Steve Beuerlein, a CBS analyst who watched the Raiders build a 37-6 lead early in the third quarter against the Chargers, came away impressed.
“The bottom line is that this team now has playmakers on both sides of the ball,” Beuerlein said on “NFL Monday Quarterback.”
“This is a real football team playing with extreme confidence. They’re getting more confident every week. Jack Del Rio has changed the culture. It’s really impressive to see. These guys are going to be a force.”
Even though New York fell to New England, the Jets were no less impressive, according to CBS analyst Chris Simms.
“The Jets are one of the best teams in football,” Simms said on “NFL Monday Quarterback.”
“There is no other way to say it. They have one of the best rosters.”
Del Rio promises a fourth quarter in which the Raiders were outscored by the Chargers 23-0 will be addressed seriously but not at the expense of brushing aside the most complete effort seen by the Raiders since a 59-14 win over Denver in 2010.
The Raiders asserted themselves in all phases within the first 2:14 of clock time. First, Jamize Olawale dropped the Chargers’ Jacoby Jones at the 11-yard line on the opening kickoff. That was followed quickly by Malcolm Smith’s interception and return to the 2-yard line, and a 1-yard run by Latavius Murray for a touchdown.
Del Rio said “complementary football, where all three phases are contributing, those are factors that add up to successful football.”
“I’ve already spoken to him and he knows we need him to remain in control there,” Del Rio said. “Where our tackles have been called out, they’ve been protecting their teammates. … You have to do it within the confines of the rules.”
