SAN JOSE — A woman was found fatally stabbed in a downtown apartment Monday and police have arrested a man in connection with her death, authorities said.

Around 10:20 a.m., San Jose police responded to a request for a welfare check at The Globe Apartments at 25 S. 3rd St., said Sgt. Enrique Garcia with the San Jose Police Department. When officers got into the apartment, they found a woman dead inside with at least one stab wound.

Garcia said 28-year-old San Jose resident Hugo Castro was detained and later arrested on suspicion of murder. Garcia added that a preliminary investigation revealed that the woman and Hugo had a prior dating relationship, but that the apartment where the crime occurred was owned by a third party.

Police did not reveal how or why Castro and the victim were at the apartment Monday morning. Police also did not say what may have lead to the incident.

The woman’s identity is being withheld pending notification of her family.

The homicide marks the city’s 25th so far this year.

On its website, The Globe Apartments are described as “urban condominium residences.”

“Living in the center of it all is essential, not an option. We’ve created a place to call your own,” one of the descriptions for the building reads on the website.
