BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A new statue of Theodore Roosevelt is being unveiled at the western New York site where he was sworn in as the nation’s 26th president.
The former New York governor-turned-vice president took the oath of office inside a friend’s mansion in Buffalo on Sept. 14, 1901. That’s the day President William McKinley died after being shot by an assassin eight days earlier while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo.
The home where the inauguration was held later became the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site.
A new, 7½-foot statue of Roosevelt was installed outside the mansion Monday. It’s being unveiled at 5 p.m. Tuesday, which would have been Roosevelt’s 157th birthday.
Roosevelt was hunting in the Adirondacks when McKinley died. A train rushed him to Albany, then on to Buffalo.
