CAYUCOS, Calif. (AP) A San Luis Obispo County beach town is getting back their central pier after two years and $3.5 million of repairs.
The San Luis Obispo Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1MoTzBE ) that the Cayucos pier closed in July 2013 due to concerns about its conditions and safety. But after a massive rebuilding effort, the pier is slated to reopen on Halloween.
The pier had missing and deteriorating piles and degraded beams and cross bracing. The county-led rebuilding effort installed 222 new piles, a wider deck and decorative lighting. Officials say the 982-foot pier was effectively rebuilt.
The pier has been a focal point of Cayucos since it was built in 1872 by the founder of the community.
