FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A California police auditor says the Fresno department is taking too long to complete internal reviews after its officers are involved in a shooting.

The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/1MgiYHc ) that Fresno police auditor Rick Rasmussen released a report Monday that says the investigations typically take more than 350 days to complete. His office says that amount of time is “excessive.”

Rasmussen encourages the department to finish reviews and audits within six months because of the public interest.

Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer says the department has already publically committed to reducing investigation times and that he was surprised to see it in the report.

During an August community forum, Dyer said he would commit to completing the reports in nine months with the goal of eventually getting to six months.
