SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) A former independent police auditor will helm a new commission charged with investigating a troubled San Francisco Bay Area jail.
KNTV reports (http://bit.ly/1POIRVl) Tuesday that the Board of Supervisors called for the formation of the 25-member commission after the death of inmate Michael Tyree at the county’s main jail in August.
Three deputies are facing murder charges in that case. Committee head LaDoris Cordell, a retired judge, says the commission will make recommendations to make sure what happened to Tyree doesn’t happen again.
Additionally, eight correctional deputies have been removed from duty since Tyree was found in his jail cell on Aug, 26, bleeding from internal injuries. The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s is also investigating as many as 100 use-of-force complaints filed after the death.
Recommendations are expected in four months.
