SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — The attorney for a former Los Angeles crack kingpin says the $100,000 found in his client’s car had nothing to do with drugs.

The Press Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/1MpCQxX ) that the Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies arrested “Freeway” Ricky Ross was arrested on suspicion of possessing money related to drug sales.

Ross was released on $10,000 bail Thursday.

Attorney Jai Gohel says the 55-year-old Ross was pulled over last week while on his way to buy land and was wrongly targeted as part of a harvest-time effort to intercept vehicles with cash or marijuana.

Gohel says Ross gets money from book sales and the case is “a total waste of time.”

Ross was released from prison in 2009. Authorities say he ruled the crack trade from his South Los Angeles base in the 1990s.
