Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez have announced that they are divorcing after two years of marriage.
In announcing their split in a statement to People, the couple spoke, as per usual in celebrity divorce announcements, of their mutual love and respect but also said it was time to move on and asked for privacy for themselves and their family. “We wish each other nothing but happiness in life, and we hope that you respect our and, most importantly, our children’s privacy as we go through this difficult period,” their statement read.
The Academy Award-winning actress and French actor have one son together, 2-year-old Maceo-Robert, and Berry has a 7-year-old daughter, Nahla Ariela with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry.
Sophie Dulac, the president of the Champs-Elyses Film Festival, has said that Berry once regarded Martinez as “the one,” according to People. But the smoldering French actor is now on track to become ex-husband No. 3.
The split is the latest in Berry’s tumultuous history of romance.
Berry famously said that one of her former boyfriends, an unnamed but well-known Hollywood figure, beat her so badly he punctured her eardrum and caused her to lose 80 percent of her hearing in her left ear.
Before becoming famous, she also dated a Chicago dentist, with that relationship ending in a lawsuit. Her two-year marriage to singer-songwriter Eric Benet fell apart in 2005, with him undergoing treatment for sex addiction.
Her nearly five-year romance with Aubrey, whom she met at a Versace photo shoot, ended bitterly in 2010, and the couple are still locked in a custody battle.
Berry and Martinez met on a movie set in 2010 and married three years later at a rustic French chateau.
A source told People that the marriage had simply “run its course.” But unlike her previous break-up with Aubrey, Berry is keeping her relationship with Martinez “amicable,” the source said, adding, “She is OK.”
