Looking for an edge in deciding on a winner in the World Series? Don’t overlook the Lakewood Effect.
This is the third year that an alum from Lakewood High in Los Angeles County will be playing in the Series. Last year, Matt Duffy won a ring with the Giants. In 2013, it was Mike Carp with the Red Sox. Is this the year for the Mets’ Travis d’Arnaud?
All three remain close to longtime Lakewood baseball coach Spud O’Neil.
“It’s almost a miracle what has happened,” O’Neil told ESPN. “We’re really excited, and everyone is so proud in our area with what has happened the last three years.”
Of the three, O’Neil has been most impressed by San Francisco third baseman Duffy.
“Matt was one of our favorites, but we didn’t think he would go as far as he did. He proved everybody wrong. He never quit.”
