Spotted bass showing at Lake Oroville | North State Fishing Report https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/29/spotted-bass-showing-at-lake-oroville-north-state-fishing-report/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 09:15:17 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4356722 LAKE OROVILLE: Numbers of spotted bass have been the story as the fish are moving into the shallows. The water is still too cold for spawning at 52 degrees, and more warm weather is needed. Spotted bass are found on plastics on the Bass Union weedless darter head or drop-shot along with small Keitech swimbaits on underspins as the fish are focusing on the lake’s pond smelt. King salmon are a possibility, but many trollers are holding off this year to allow the 16- to 18-inch kings to grow to over 20 inches. The lake rose four feet to 866.64 feet in elevation and 86 percent with heavy water releases down the Feather River.

LAKE SHASTA: Guide Scott Caldwell reported that during the past few days Lake Shasta has provided some fantastic Brown and Rainbow Trout fishing. Trolling the surface down to 35 feet with bait, flies, plugs, and spoons, has provided steady action on browns and bows in the 1 to 7-pound class, with 1 to 3 pounders providing the bulk of the action. Jeff Goodwin also reported some great springtime conditions and a solid bite. Lake temps in the low 50’s have really helped to get some of the bigger browns and rainbows biting a bit more consistently. He’s been catching multi pound rainbows and browns every day and averaging 12+ keepers on most days with noticeably larger fish than seen in past seasons. The abundance of Shad in the lake has helped these fish with a notable growth spurt this winter. Most have been caught trolling spoons in the top 20′ of the lake. The water color has been great all year but with a rising lake, there is more debris. John Boitano, a Pro-staffer at Phil’s Propeller in Redding, fished Shasta on the 21st and reported a solid bass bite with fish in the arms, cuts, and main body. Reaction baits, big swim baits, and finesse baits fished deep have been solid producers. There are fish in the shallows, but they have been moving between the shallows and deep as the weather changes.

TRINITY RIVER, Willow Creek: The lower Trinity is still big and off color and not in fishing shape. Another round of storms are moving through over the weekend and will push flows to 18,000 cfs. Dirty water coming out of the South Fork will likely keep it dirty for some time. Flows Sunday were around 16,200 cfs on the Hoopa gauge and dropping.

AMERICAN RIVER/above Folsom Lake: The flows are high, rising to 3785 cfs at Chili Bar. There is minimal change as the water remains stained, particularly in the Middle Fork due to the burn scar from the Mosquito Fire. Action is limited in the dirty water. The upper river is catch-and-release, artificial, and barbless hooks until the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in May.

AMERICAN RIVER/Sacramento: flows have dropped from over 6,000 cfs. on March 11th to 4,680 on the 23rd. Before the last storm, there had been an occasional steelhead from the Sailor Bar area taken on beads, roe, and some lures.

FEATHER RIVER: there was an Oroville dam release to 10,000 cfs. on the 23rd. Steelhead reports are spotty from the upper river. Guide Pete Franco reported the start of some limited striper action on the lower river. Guide Garrett Kenyon reported some scattered striper schools below Rio Vista but a lot of pressure. The fish are small but if you get on them they are not picky. Minnows are a solid bet, but trolling has been producing as well.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, Keswick Reservoir to Red Bluff: Guide Justin Thompson reported that now is the time to fish the Sacramento River for wild rainbow/steelhead. He is catching lots and lots of fish daily, the peak time is now through June. If you want a short getaway with an action-packed day of catching fish on ultra-light rods this is the place to bring your kids or friends up. It’s a no brainer!! The Fly Shop in Redding reported improving conditions with current flows at 5,000 cfs. but scheduled to drop to 4,000 cfs. by the end of next week. Action has been good and many of the same patterns are still working. The fish are holding together in some of the deeper water so if you find one, you’ll probably find a couple more.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, Colusa to Tisdale: Water levels and conditions have finally begun to settle and will be in fishing shape before long. There has been an increasing number of larger resident fish being posted. Please release your larger fish!!! Current water level has dropped from 21,700 cfs. on march 18th to 16,400 cfs. on the 24th.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, Metro area: Uncle Larry at Sacramento Pro Tackle reported improving conditions and the very front edge of the striper season with 22–24-inch fish starting to show on the West Bank across from Discovery Park, and a short bite in the vicinity of Verona. Blood worms, minnows and cut bait are all starting to sell like crazy so there must be something going on. There are still resident fish in the port and some of the newer fish are starting to move in. This is just the very front so don’t expect any numbers yet.

The bi-weekly fishing report, compiled by Western Outdoor News, highlights the best angling opportunities in the north state.

Player of the Year AJ Gambol highlights All Northern Section girls basketball teams https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/28/player-of-the-year-aj-gambol-highlights-all-northern-section-girls-basketball-teams/ Fri, 29 Mar 2024 00:14:53 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4357832 The Pleasant Valley girls basketball team made an impressive run deep into the CIF Division II state playoffs, defeating a strong Oakland Tech team, before falling one game short of a state championship berth. Both teams shared the EAL regular season title.

It was an exciting rivalry between PV and its cross-town rival Chico, as the Vikings and Panthers both won at their home gyms, before meeting once again in the Northern Section championship where PV got the victory.

The Vikings, a team made up of primarily juniors and just one senior, were led in scoring by AJ Gambol, the All Northern Section Player of the Year.

The All Northern Section teams are voted on by sports reporters in the Northern Section including Rick Silva from the Red Bluff Daily News, Jeff Larson from the Marysville Appeal-Democrat, Justin Couchot from the Chico Enterprise-Record, and reporters Aaron Williams from Redding and Jennifer Corriea from Colusa.

Gambol became PV’s all-time leading scorer on a free throw she made Feb. 8 against Chico, and finished her junior season averaging 19.6 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game. She scored a career-high 31 points in the NSCIF championship game against Chico, and tied that in the Vikings’ state playoff loss to Colfax.

In game one Addie Scott had two doubles and one RBI, and Allie Little had three hits, including a double and three RBI. Sheppard added a double and two RBI at the plate.

In game two nine different Wolverines had an RBI, led by Little adding three hits and four RBIs to her days total. Bermudez had three RBIs, and Mailey Seipert and Jazmin Ibarra had two hits each.

Chico High baseball splits EAL opener against Red Bluff https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/22/chico-high-baseball-splits-eal-opener-against-red-bluff/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 20:14:52 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4313618 CHICO — Eastern Athletic League play began Thursday for the Chico High baseball team, and with tournament play concluded it appears the EAL will be closely contested. Five of six teams are above .500, and Shasta, Red Bluff, Chico and Foothill have eclipsed seven wins.

The Panthers (7-3-1) began EAL play Thursday with a doubleheader against Red Bluff (7-2) at Skip McDonald Field in Chico, under first-year head coach Brian Thomas.

Despite Chico leading early in game one, the Spartans came from behind to defeat the Panthers 4-2. In game two Chico once again led early, taking a 7-1 lead after five innings. Chico held off another late surge by Red Bluff, and defeated the Spartans 8-6 to split the EAL matchup.

“We just need to keep the hammer on people, and as we do that, we’ll continue to build that lead farther and farther away,” said Chico’s Jaden Neugebauer. “That’s when teams can’t come back like this, but we’re going to sharpen up and be better the next game.”

Neugebauer scored the first run for Chico in the first inning of game one, coming off an RBI single from his brother Jorden Neugebauer. Jaden Neugebauer walked in his first at bat, advanced to third on two passed balls, and scored on an RBI single to left center by Jordan Neugebauer.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Abrahan Medina reached on an error, Cal Stephens singled to left field, and Jaden Neugebauer singled with two outs to score Medina as he slid head first into home plate.

The Spartans took a 3-2 lead in the third inning, and added one run in the fifth, and the Panthers’ offense remained scoreless after the second.

“Some of us got a little longer than what I’d like to see,” Thomas said. “We had a game plan going into the game of staying short and putting the ball in play. I don’t know how many times we punched out, but it was too many in this type of game.”

Red Bluff pitcher Cooper Sides — a sophomore — struck out 10 in seven innings, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks.

The Spartans scored their first run on a wild pitch, and with two outs Ryan Ross hit an opposite field single to right center to score Lucas Owens and Landon Duarte. The Spartans’ final run came in the fifth inning on a single by Owens, a stolen base, a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch.

“The big message is it is what it is for game one,” Thomas said to his team after game one. “We have to focus on game two, and turning the day into a positive rather than dwelling on what just happened. That arm is really really good. I liked our approach for the most part at the plate. The ball doesn’t bounce our way, but we have to have a short memory and a good learning curve for our guys, and see what they do in game two.”

In game two, the Panthers’ bats re-ignited, and they were helped out by the Spartans’ defense. They took a 2-0 lead on a wild pitch, and a pair of stolen bases by Jaden Neugebauer and an error.

The Spartans cut the lead to 2-1 on an RBI single by Carson Ledbetter. Chico took a 6-1 lead on a bases-loaded walk by Medina, another bases-loaded walk by Owen Mass. Stephens was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Chico a 5-1 lead, and Noah Meyer singled to left field to give Chico its 6-1 lead.

Jaden Neugebauer singled to right field to give Chico a 7-1 lead, but Riley Bestor was thrown out at home trying to increase the lead to 8-1.

The Panthers’ final run came on an RBI triple by Tanner Horn that scored Luke Henderson.

When Jaden Neugebauer was asked where he believes his team is at compared to where he believes they need to be, he put it at a 6 or 7 on a scale of 1-10. He said with a large group of seniors graduating last season, the communication and chemistry is still in the works.

“I feel like our at bats are more for ourselves instead of the team,” Neugebauer said. “It’s all about becoming more of a team and building culture, and we’re trying to show the younger kids who have been called up and coach them up.”

Chico has nine days off before it will travel to Sacramento for a non-league game at Twelve Bridges at 11 a.m. March 30. The Panthers will return to EAL action April 1 at 4 p.m. at Pleasant Valley, in the first of three meetings between the cross-town rivals.

Red Bluff will travel to Clovis on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the Fresno Easter Classic at Clovis High School.

The Panthers and Spartans will meet once more at 4 p.m. April 5 in Red Bluff.

Chris Click hired as head football coach at Chico High https://www.chicoer.com/2024/03/15/chris-click-hired-as-head-football-coach-at-chico-high/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 23:46:17 +0000 https://www.chicoer.com/?p=4265110 Chris Click, an assistant football coach who served the past nine years as defensive coordinator at Chico High, has been hired as the Panthers’ new head coach.

Click replaces Jason Alvistur, who stepped down last month after leading the Panthers’ football program for the past 15 seasons.

“I am thrilled to continue working with the Chico High School family as the head varsity football coach,” Click said. “I am committed to building on the tradition of excellence that Chico High football is known for and am excited to work with our student-athletes to achieve their full potential.”

An assistant coach since 2013, Click took over as defensive coordinator in 2015.

Chico High Principal Doug Williams said “We are confident that Coach Click’s leadership will bring a new level of energy and excellence to our football program. His passion for the game and dedication to our student-athletes make him the perfect fit for Chico High School.”
