Volunteering is one of life’s great privileges. We do it because we want to; not because we have to. Our motives are unselfish in nature, and we know that one of the best ways to help oneself is to help others. It brings people together from a variety of life experiences and it promotes positive changes in our community.
We live in difficult times. I am reminded every day that whenever I think I have problems, I don’t have to look far to find others whose troubles make mine pale in comparison. But what can I do? What can we do? When considering the seemingly insurmountable problems in the world, we may feel overwhelmed and helpless. But there may be an answer or at least one approach that if practiced by everyone could work…
Years ago, I discovered a hymn entitled, “Brighten the Corner where you Are” by Ina D. Ogdon. Its message is simple in content but powerful in its impact. It suggests that all of us, in our daily lives, treat people well, be nonjudgmental, listen to the stories of others, and offer acceptance and support regardless of one’s social circumstances.
Enloe Health provides opportunities to “brighten corners” through numerous departments; there truly is something for everyone. I encourage you to consider lending a hand at Enloe. It’s an opportunity to give back, spread kindness, establish new friendships, have fun, and help out!
