Chico State finished a four-game series at Reeder Field at Cal State LA with an 11-8 win Sunday to improve to 16-9 and 11-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

It was the third straight win for the Wildcats, who dropped the series opener to LA on Friday.

The Wildcats took a 3-1 lead after two innings, led by a two-run home run by Daniel Vierra in the first inning. Vierra had three hits and three RBI. He had a second home run in the eighth inning.

The Wildcats led 11-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, but LA scored five runs to pull within three runs.

Dylan Day started on the mound for the Wildcats and pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, one walk and struck out two. Jeremy Keller came on in relief and pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, two earns runs and striking out two to earn his first win of the season. Joseph Loubert, Ryan Silvers and Scott Lewis pitched one inning each. Lewis came in in the ninth inning and allowed four hits and five runs, but none were earned.

Chico State now begins a four-game series at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 6 p.m. Thursday in Chico.

College softball

Central Washington 5, Chico State 4: The Chico State women’s softball team was able to get only two of a scheduled five games in at the Stanislaus State Tournament of Champions Friday through Sunday, and the Wildcats split the two games.

Chico defeated Academy of Art 9-1 in five innings Friday, before rain and lighting canceled its game against Hawai’i Hilo on Friday evening. The rain continued and canceled two games Saturday, and the Wildcats dropped the finale Sunday.

Chico led Sunday’s game 4-3 after five innings, but allowed two runs on a two RBI double by Brooke Jordan in the top of the seventh inning.

Hannah Levy led Chico with three hits. Chico shortstop Elisa Haas had a three-run home run in the fifth inning and an RBI in the third inning. Ali Lewis had two hits, including a double.

Amelie Valdez pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, five runs (four earned), five walks and striking out eight. Katelyn Oldwin got the final two outs, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Chico State (6-16, 5-11 CCAA) returns to CCAA play at 1 p.m. Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
