Cathy Edgar was named both the 2023 Most Improved Player as well as the Player-of-the-Year by the Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club at its annual Officer Installation and Awards Meeting last week.

Cynthia Paulo relinquished her captain’s gavel to the incoming captain, Karen Escott, while at the same time being honored by the club as Most Inspirational. In addition to her work in support of the women’s golf club and local community activities, Paulo also serves as a rules official on NCGA and USGA tournaments throughout the state.

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club played a 4-Player Scramble for its weekly outing. Taking first was the team of Lynne Beyers, Karen Escott, Cynthia Paulo and Sally Pearson with a net score of 61.2. Closest to pin on No. 6: 1, Bonnie Seely; 2, Shelley Carney; 3, Nancy Vieira.

Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club

It was another good turnout of the Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club at Bidwell last week. The payouts went down to fifth place because of the large number of players. The format was a Two-Man, Alternate Shot. Both players teed off on every hole and then, after selecting the best tee shot, it was alternate shot until the ball was holed out.

Taking first was the team of Mark Gray and Richard Nussbaum with a net score of 69.5. Finishing in the second spot was the team of Bob Mabrey and Gary White with a score of 71.5. Jim Barger and Greg Brown shot 72 for third place. The team of Kyle Glaziner and Ken Glaziner, 73.5, and the team of Bill Bingaman and Michael Welsh, 74.5 finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Closest to pin contests were held on all five of the par 3 holes. Hole No. 2: 1, Kyle Glaziner; 2, Jim Weidert; Hole No. 4: 1, Ken Glaziner; 2, Joe Velazquez; Hole No. 7: None (no one hit the green); Hole No. 12: 1, Mike Lim; 2, Velasquez; Hole No. 16: 1, Velasquez…again; 2, Doug Shook. Looks like Velasquez took home the lion’s share of the stipends, even though he wasn’t on one of the winning teams.

Bidwell Park Golf Course

The Bidwell Women’s Golf Club managed to get its monthly Pro-Points Tournament in last week just in time before the rain put a damper on the party.

First flight low gross: Gayle Aylward, 92. Low net: Becky Callas, 79. Second flight low gross: Pam Coleman, 107. Low net: Jolene Nixon, 83. Third flight low gross: Lynn Collar. Low net: Linda Mowell. Closest to the pin: Callas.

Butte Creek Country Club

The Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club week game was “Front Nine or Back Nine”. Players could choose either nine for their nine hole score.

First flight: 1, Jayne Bunting, 36; 2, tie, Pam Miller and Sandy Fortino, 37. Second flight: 1, Tami Blofsky 35; 2, Irma Jenkins, 37; 3, Suzy Mann, 40.

Spectacular shots

Lynn Kyle holed out her 125 approach shot on the par 4, 18th hole at Butte Creek. Kyle selected her trusty 7 wood for her perfect shot, and a 2 on her scorecard, as attested by her playing companions Jayne Bunting, Vicki Ellcessor and Joan Hart.

Looking back

Because the recent rains have somewhat hampered local golf news, let’s look back to Jan. 20, 2009 and see who might still be making the scene from the past in local golf.

Cecil Braswell was the last one standing in the first flight of the El Rancho Chico Men’s 3-Club/Flag Tournament at Bidwell Park GC last week.  Braswell was able to plant his flag last in a format wherein you keep playing until your score minus your handicap adds up to par. Pat Goodwin, and son Ryan, took second and third respectively. Jeff Nedved shot the low gross score in the first flight. Dave Koistinen took the second spot.

Second flight: low gross, tie, Gary Pedersen and Craig Fellner. Flag placement: 1, Jim Peplow; 2, Glen Bleske; 3, Mike Fitzsimmons. Third flight: low gross, 1, Dan Long; 2, tie, Rich Lash and Don Beck. Flag placement: 1, Craig Warnick; 2, Dick Dobkins; 3, Wes Dinsmore. Closest to the pin winners on the four par 3 holes: Dobkins, Ron West, Ryan Goodwin, Dan Long and Roy Peters.

Kay Kurdziel came in with a score of 90 to win low gross in the first flight of the Bidwell Park GC Women’s Golf Club “Any Nine” Tournament. Pat VanDyke took low net and Elizabeth Rake was second.
