To call the 2023 Butte Creek Men’s Player-of-the-Year final standings “close,” would be the understatement of the year, and also a clear testament to Yogi Berra’s cliché, “It ain’t over till it’s over.”
Going into the finals, Billy Rogers, the reigning men’s club champion, was in first place and started the final tournament with 2,000 points. Royal Hawkley was in the second spot with 1,800 points. Blake Barstow was in ninth place with 640 points, and Kevin Milliken was sitting way back in 19th place (one from the bottom) with a mere 231 points. The top 20 point leaders earn eligibility to participate in the final tournament of the year which determines the player-of-the-year.
The winner of the final tournament of the year earns 2,000 points. Second place earns 1,200 points. Third place earns 760 points, and 4th place earns 435 points.
At the end of regulation play, Milliken and Barstow were tied, each at a net 70. Both players scored par on the first playoff hole. The par 5, second hole was the clincher. Milliken made par and Barstow had to settle for a bogie. The 2,000 points Milliken earned for his first place finish vaulted him up to second place in the final standings with 2,231 points, just 4 points shy of Hawkley’s total of 2,235 points. Hawkley tied for fourth place and earned 435 points in the process, just enough to barely edge out Milliken for the title. The final standings and earning golf shop credit were: 1, Hawkley; 2, Milliken; 3, Rogers; 4, Tyler Collier; 5, Barstow.
Those placing in the final tournament and their net scores were: 1, Milliken, 70 (won playoff); 2, Barstow, 70; 3, Collier, 72, and also low gross at 68, (Tyler was playing to a +4, therefore he had to give 4 strokes back to par for his net score); 4, tie, Hawkley, Aaron Rogers, Rob Sylvester and Derek Minetti, 74.
