Looking back to
February 25, 2014

With minimal golf news because of the havoc Mother Nature has played recently on our local golf courses, let’s step back 10 years and see who was achieving success on the links.

Canyon Oaks Country Club: The competition was tough and the scores close in the Canyon Oaks CC NCGA 2-Man Net Better Ball qualifying round (actually called “four-ball”). Three teams tied for low net at 62 and six teams tied for fourth place with a score of 63. The team of Mike O’Donnell and Ryan O’Donnell and the team of Jim Stevens and Dan Gonzales edged out the team of Paul Zastrow and Jason Zastrow on a back-nine card-off. The Zastrow boys will have to settle for the alternate spot if one of the winning teams cannot make the next level of qualifying on April 22. One of the qualifying courses is Bidwell Park GC, which is very convenient for those in our area. Sure beats having to drive to the bay area or Sacramento.

Chico SIR’s Golf Club: Alan Stephenson was again on top in the first flight of the Chico SIRS Golf Club tournament, held at Bidwell Park GC, with a net score of 66. Pete Abolins and Ray Navarro tied for second place with a score of 74. Don Cummings also shot a net 66 to win the second flight. Way to go Don! Rich Attinger and Joe Gallaway tied for second place at 68. Don Foster shot a net 68 to win the third flight. Gene Rideout (69) was second. Mike Hood, also with a net 66, won the fourth flight. Bob Huss and Jack Schmidtke both shot a net 67 to tie for the second spot. Closest to pin winners were: 1, Bob Mayerak; 2, Skip Reager; 3, Darrel Hands; 4, Abolins; 4, Navarro.

Butte Creek Country Club: At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Irma Jenkins proceeded to win the first flight in the Butte Creek CC Women’s Golf Club Stableford tournament with a five-point margin score of 39 points. Karla Dreiss (34) and Karey McKenney (33) finished second and third respectively. Joan Bequette and Betty Dean tied for first place in the second flight with 33 points. Cil Hauer won the third flight with 30 points. Jackie Heal (29 points) took the second spot.

Table Mountain Golf Course: I see Sandy Goble is back in form in the Table Mountain GC Women’s Golf Club weekly tournaments. Goble was overall low gross with a score of 84. Pam Weichert won low net with a score of 66. First flight winners: 1, Sue Snow; 2, Sally Stemen; 3, Janett Ott. Second flight: 1, Elaine Thomas; 2, Kris McGee; 3, Liz Hofeling. Third flight: 1, Jody Thompson; 2, Linda Lindberg; 3, Linda Ginter. Fourth flight: Diane Baker; 2, Jane Sherwood: 3, Cheryl Burnett.

Paradise SIR’s Golf Club: The Paradise SIR’s Golf Club played their semi-monthly tournament at Tuscan Ridge GC. The team of Lloyd Speights, Curtis Stark and Mike Kruger won the three-man, two best-ball flight with a net score of 131. The team of Gary McElroy, Ed Polen, Billy Troegner and Marv Banta and the team of Rudy Melashenko, Dave Roberts, Ralph Johnson and Richard Boulter tied for first in the four-man flight. Clint Williams won closest to the pin. Larry Speck took home the special Priscilla Rawlings prize.

Spectacular shots: Marc Richmond recorded his fifth career ace on the 17th hole at Table Mountain GC. His playing companions, Charlie Dunn, Kim DeHagen and Larry Strand witnessed Richmond’s perfect 125-yard, 9-iron tee shot disappear into the cup.

Mike Fisher achieved his first ever hole-in-one on the No. 4 hole at Bidwell Park GC. Jim Barger, Ron Peterson and Dick Triplett attested to Fisher’s 130-yard, 9-iron tee shot. This was obviously Fisher’s lucky day because four holes later on the 451-yard, par-5, 8th hole his 7-wood, 170-yard approach shot ended up 8-feet from the cup and he proceeded to drain the putt for an eagle three. Two eagles on the front nine. Frame that score card, Mike.
